Dishwashers ownership guide: salt, rinse aid, filters and repairs

Most dishwasher problems are easier to prevent than diagnose after failure. Match salt and rinse-aid settings to local water and detergent, load without blocking spray, clean filters safely and stop promptly when water, heat or electrical symptoms appear.

QUICK VERDICT

Start with the manual, water hardness and a clean filter

A reliable dishwasher routine is model-specific: correct settings, unobstructed spray, regular filter inspection and immediate attention to leaks or electrical symptoms. Adding more detergent or cleaner rarely fixes a blocked arm, wrong programme, poor loading or hard-water setting.

Choose and position the appliance with our dishwasher installation guide, compare purchase value in the dishwasher value guide and decode capacity with the place-settings guide.

Monthly ownership check

  • Read the model manual before removing parts.
  • Inspect and clean the filter using the approved method.
  • Check spray-arm holes and free rotation without forcing them.
  • Wipe door seals and edges where the main wash may not reach.
  • Confirm salt and rinse-aid settings against water hardness and detergent.
  • Run the recommended maintenance programme only as directed.
  • Inspect hoses and the cabinet area for moisture or abrasion.
  • Record repeat errors, noises, drainage and repair history.

Keep the exact manual and model record

Photograph the rating plate and save the model, serial number, purchase date, installer and warranty documents. Manuals differ on filters, salt reservoirs, self-cleaning cycles, child locks and error codes. Generic advice should never override the manufacturer’s sequence.

Store the manual digitally where the household can find it before a leak. Add the water shut-off location, electrical isolation method and service contact. This preparation matters more than remembering a cleaning hack after the appliance stops.

Water hardness controls salt decisions

Dishwasher salt supports the built-in water softener on models designed for it; it is not table salt and does not act as ordinary detergent. Find the local water hardness, set the machine as instructed and fill the correct reservoir without scattering salt into the tub.

All-in-one tablets do not automatically remove the need for salt in every hard-water setting. Follow the appliance and detergent guidance together. Our washing-machine ownership guide shows the same principle: record water hardness and settings before adding more chemicals.

Rinse aid changes drying and water behaviour

Rinse aid helps water sheet from surfaces and can improve drying, particularly on some plastics. Set the dispenser according to the manual and observed result. Too little can leave droplets; too much may contribute to streaking or residue.

Do not pour rinse aid into the detergent compartment or overfill without cleaning spills as directed. If the product is already included in a combined detergent, the appliance setting and local water can still affect the result. When assessing dishwasher drying, alter only one permitted detergent or rinse-aid setting between comparable loads and note the result before changing another setting.

Detergent dose should match load and programme

Use a dishwasher detergent in the form and quantity permitted by the manual. Hand-washing liquid can create excessive foam and leaks. A stronger dose does not compensate for a short unsuitable cycle, blocked spray or food trapped in the filter.

Store detergents securely away from children and moisture, and handle pods with dry hands. Record product, dose, water hardness, programme and result when troubleshooting. This prevents random switching from obscuring the actual cause.

Load for spray access rather than maximum count

Face soiled surfaces toward spray, keep tall items away from arms and avoid nesting bowls, spoons or containers. Nothing should fall through the rack onto a heater or obstruct detergent-door opening. Check arm rotation before starting.

Place delicate or non-dishwasher-safe items elsewhere. Wood, sharp knives, decorated glass, aluminium and non-stick coatings can have manufacturer-specific restrictions. Our countertop-appliance cleaning guide explains why a dishwasher claim still has cycle and material limits.

Scrape food but follow modern programme guidance

Remove bones, labels, seeds and substantial scraps so they do not collect in the filter, but excessive pre-rinsing may waste water and can affect sensor behaviour on some machines. Follow the detergent and appliance guidance for the selected programme.

Sticky starch, baked protein and tea stains respond differently. Use the appropriate rack and cycle rather than treating every miss as a detergent failure. Record repeated patterns by item position; a consistently dirty corner may indicate spray obstruction.

Filters need careful, regular inspection

Switch the machine off as instructed, let hot parts cool and remove the filter only by the manual’s method. Note its orientation, rinse away debris and use a soft brush if permitted. Do not damage mesh or allow objects to fall into the sump.

Refit and lock the filter completely. A loose assembly can recirculate food or contact a spray arm. Cleaning frequency depends on use and machine design; inspect sooner after a heavily soiled load instead of relying only on a calendar.

Spray arms should rotate freely without drilling or pins

Check that racks, handles and utensils do not block rotation. Remove arms only if the manual permits it, then rinse holes and clear soft debris with the approved method. A metal pin can enlarge jets or push material deeper.

Uneven cleaning, unusual knocking or a dry rack can point to obstruction, loading or water supply. Photograph the pattern and test one corrected load. Repeated failure may require a technician rather than increasingly aggressive cleaning.

Door edges, seals and hinges need separate attention

The main wash may not reach the top edge and gasket folds. Wipe them with the recommended mild method, checking for trapped food, glass and deformation. Avoid flooding latch openings or using abrasive tools that damage the seal.

A seal should not be automatically pulled out for cleaning unless designed for user removal. If the door is misaligned, difficult to latch or leaking, stop using the machine until the cause is identified. Hinge and spring systems can carry significant force.

Odours are evidence, not a fragrance problem

Check filter, sump, seals, drain route and how long dirty dishes remain enclosed. Run the manufacturer’s maintenance programme with an approved cleaner only when directed. Fragrance can mask residue without removing a blockage or drainage fault.

A sewage smell, backflow, standing water or repeated incomplete drain needs plumbing and appliance investigation. Do not mix bleach, acids or proprietary cleaners. Ventilate and follow chemical labels; dangerous gases can result from incompatible products.

Unload in an order that protects dry dishes

Allow the programme to finish and follow automatic-door guidance for the model. Unload the lower rack first when water can collect in upper-rack cups or plastic lips. Plastic has lower heat retention and may remain wetter than ceramic or glass.

If drying is consistently poor, review programme, rinse aid, load and selected options before assuming a fault. Avoid touching an exposed heating element and keep children away from hot steam when opening soon after a cycle.

Leaks require immediate, calm isolation

Stop the programme, keep people away from water near electrics and isolate power and water only if it is safe and you know the correct controls. Do not continue running the machine to reproduce a significant leak. Photograph location and volume.

Check whether recent loading, salt filling, filter refitting, plumbing work or excessive foam preceded the event. Water under fitted cabinets can travel away from the source. Use our product-fault photography guide to record the location safely, and seek qualified help when the source is unclear.

Error codes should be recorded before resetting

Photograph the complete display or indicator pattern and note programme stage, sounds, water level and recent maintenance. Look up the exact model manual. A reset can clear useful evidence and is not a repair for a repeated condition.

Do only the user checks explicitly described: for example filter, kinked accessible hose or supply tap where safe. Do not remove fixed panels, bypass safety devices or reach into pumps. Electrical, heating and internal water faults require competent diagnosis.

Repair decisions should include age and installation

Give the technician model, serial, code, symptom history and installation access. A clear record can reduce diagnosis time. Compare repair quote, remaining expected use, energy and water consumption, cabinet compatibility and disposal rather than using appliance age alone.

Check warranty and consumer-rights evidence before authorising paid work. Our appliance repairability guide keeps a single call-out cost from deciding the whole outcome. Never backdate or alter evidence.

A short log prevents repeated guesswork

Record salt and rinse-aid settings, filter cleaning, detergent, programme, water hardness and unusual results. Photograph recurring residue in the same light. A pattern across rack position, material and cycle is more useful than “it sometimes cleans badly”.

Review household habits: overloaded cutlery, blocked detergent door and wet plastics may be loading issues rather than machine failure. Browse Home & Kitchen for related appliance and kitchen-care guides.

Maintain safely or book a repair?

CONTINUE USER MAINTENANCE IF…

The manual identifies a safe accessible check

Filter, spray arms, settings, loading or approved cleaning explains the symptom and the machine has no leak, electrical smell, heat damage or repeated error.

BOOK QUALIFIED HELP IF…

Water, electricity, heat or internal parts are involved

A leak repeats, the appliance trips power, smells hot, fails to drain after permitted checks or requires panel, pump, wiring or plumbing work.

Balanced verdict

Dishwasher reliability comes from model-specific settings and light regular maintenance, not aggressive cleaning. Match salt and rinse aid to water and detergent, preserve spray access, refit filters correctly and record faults before resetting. Isolate and escalate leaks, electrical symptoms and internal failures.

For safe electrical ownership, use our electrical safety guide and retain all installation and service records.

Frequently asked questions

Do all dishwashers need salt?

No — It depends on the model, built-in softener and local water hardness. Follow the exact manual and use dishwasher salt only in the correct reservoir.

Do all-in-one tablets replace rinse aid and salt?

Not in every machine or water condition. Check appliance settings, detergent directions and observed drying or scale one variable at a time.

What should determine the cleaning interval for a dishwasher filter?

Follow the manual and inspect according to use. Heavily soiled loads may require earlier attention than a simple monthly schedule.

Can washing-up liquid be used in a dishwasher?

No — It can create excessive foam and leaks. Use only detergent intended and approved for automatic dishwashers.

Should an error code be reset immediately?

Record the code and conditions first, then follow the exact manual. A reset can hide evidence and does not repair a repeated fault.

Methodology and limitations

We applied an appliance-ownership framework covering records, water hardness, salt, rinse aid, detergent, loading, filters, spray arms, seals, odours, drying, leaks, codes and repair decisions, supported by UK water, electrical and product-safety sources. We did not inspect or service a specific machine.

Limitations

Designs, programmes, softeners, filters, chemicals and error codes vary. Generic advice cannot replace the exact manual or qualified electrical, plumbing and appliance work. Stop and isolate only when safe if water or electrical symptoms appear.
