Air purifiers buying guide: CADR, room size, filters and noise

An air purifier is a fan-and-filter system, not a substitute for source control, safe ventilation or fixing damp. Match independently stated particle performance to the actual room and a speed you will tolerate.

QUICK VERDICT

Size for the real room at a usable speed

Choose the target pollutant, measure the served space and verify particle CADR, filter availability, noise and safe placement together. Reject vague room claims, intentional ozone production and any ownership plan that depends on unavailable or unaffordable replacement filters.

Start by identifying the problem with the indoor-air monitor guide, separate moisture control through the dehumidifier guide, and compare filter language with our filtration explainer.

Identify the source before buying equipment

Write down what creates concern: outdoor particles, pollen, smoke, cooking aerosol, pet material, dust, fragrance, damp or a particular activity. Remove or reduce the source where possible and use appropriate extraction before asking a portable device to manage what remains.

UK government ventilation guidance treats fresh-air exchange and moisture removal as fundamental building functions. A purifier may supplement those controls, but it does not provide oxygen, remove indoor moisture or repair a leak, damaged flue, mould source or unsafe appliance.

Decide whether the target is particles or gases

Mechanical filters are principally selected for particles. Odours and gaseous pollutants require suitable sorbent media, commonly activated carbon or another material documented for the target. A thin dark sheet should not automatically be valued as substantial gas control.

The US EPA notes that particle CADR does not rate gas removal and that there is no widely used equivalent performance system for residential gas filtration. Keep particle and gas claims in separate columns rather than allowing one strong number to imply both.

Measure the served space accurately

Measure floor length and width and record ceiling height. An open-plan kitchen-living area, stairwell or room with doors usually open is not equivalent to one small closed bedroom, even when the purifier will stand near the sofa.

Room-size badges may rely on different air-change assumptions and ceiling heights. Save the calculation stated by the maker and compare products using the same served volume rather than treating the largest advertised square-metre figure as universal.

Use CADR as a delivery rate, not a magic score

Clean Air Delivery Rate combines airflow and removal effectiveness for particles under a defined test. Higher relevant CADR can serve a larger area or provide more filtered air, but the pollutant category and test conditions must be recorded.

Some labels provide smoke, dust and pollen CADR because particle sizes differ. For fine-particle concerns, do not substitute the largest pollen number. Check the exact unit of measurement and convert only with a documented method.

Check the fan speed behind the claim

Maximum CADR is commonly measured at a high fan setting. If that setting is too loud for sleep, calls or television, the practical delivery rate will be lower when the device is turned down.

Ask for performance and noise across useful speeds, then choose a model that meets the room need without depending on an intolerable mode. A purifier that is frequently switched off provides no filtration during those hours.

Understand HEPA language without oversizing certainty

HEPA describes a high-efficiency particle-filter class, but the complete appliance also depends on airflow, seals, bypass control and fan behaviour. A loose filter material claim does not establish whole-device room performance.

Inspect whether the exact replacement is identified and whether air can bypass around it. Use the specification guide to distinguish a tested system claim from a material name placed prominently on the box.

Treat gas media as capacity that becomes exhausted

Sorbent media has finite capacity and performance varies with compound, humidity, concentration and contact time. Record media mass or other meaningful construction evidence when supplied, not just the presence of the word carbon.

Strong or dangerous gas sources require source removal, ventilation and competent advice. Do not use a domestic purifier to make combustion, solvent, carbon-monoxide or other hazardous exposure acceptable.

Avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone

EPA guidance advises against air cleaners that intentionally generate ozone in occupied spaces because ozone is a lung irritant. Ionisation, plasma and some electrostatic or UV systems require clear emissions and safety evidence rather than wellness language.

If an optional ion mode cannot be understood or disabled, choose a simpler mechanical route. A blue light, sterilising label or ion count does not prove safe occupied-room benefit.

Compare noise as a range and a character

Record published decibels with distance, speed and test condition where available. A single minimum number often represents the least effective setting and says nothing about tonal whine, pulsing auto mode or airflow near a bed.

A stable broadband fan sound may be easier to tolerate than repeated speed changes at the same average level. Where possible, listen to the complete appliance and preserve the return option without making unsupported laboratory claims.

Plan placement and airflow clearances

Follow the exact manual for wall, curtain, furniture and intake clearance. Place the unit where the served room is occupied without blocking inlets or directing an uncomfortable draught at a person.

Do not hide it behind a sofa to improve décor or place it where a child, pet, cable or door creates a tipping risk. Review the manual-before-buying checklist before committing to a footprint.

Do not let the display become the decision

Particle sensors can help show trends and automate fan speed, but their location, range, calibration and algorithm differ. A coloured ring is not a diagnosis and may respond to steam, cooking or local disturbance.

Check whether lights can be dimmed independently, whether auto mode can be overridden and whether the purifier still works fully without an app or cloud account. Simpler controls may be preferable in a bedroom or shared household.

Calculate filter availability before purchase

Record every filter stage, exact part code, current official price, estimated interval and whether a complete assembly or separate components are replaced. Forecast several cycles without pretending the interval is guaranteed.

Dust load, smoke, pets, operating hours and environment can shorten service life. A low-priced unit with proprietary filters that disappear from sale can become poor value long before its fan fails.

Include electricity and realistic run time

Use power at the intended speed and daily hours, not standby or sleep-mode power, to estimate annual consumption. Auto mode can change usage unpredictably, so show a range rather than one false-precision figure.

Combine electricity and filters through total cost of ownership. Energy efficiency does not describe cleaning effectiveness, and high airflow that is never used has no practical advantage.

Check safe filter changing and sealing

Read how the used filter is removed, bagged and disposed of, especially when it may hold dust or allergens. Check hand access, panel clips, pre-filter cleaning and whether the replacement can be seated without force.

A reset button only clears a timer; it does not restore media. Do not vacuum or wash a filter unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that treatment for the exact stage.

Separate allergy support from medical promises

Active air cleaning can reduce some airborne particles, and official UK guidance includes filtration among indoor-air interventions. Outcomes vary by source, room, exposure and individual condition, so no consumer unit should be presented as treatment or a guaranteed symptom solution.

For asthma, serious allergy or respiratory concern, use appropriate clinical advice and an evidence-led environmental plan. Stop use if the appliance or fragrance feature causes discomfort.

Do not use filtration to hide damp or mould

A purifier may capture some airborne material but cannot remove the moisture source that allows mould growth. Investigate leaks, condensation, insulation and ventilation rather than accepting a lower sensor colour as proof the building problem is solved.

Use the moisture route in our dehumidifier and laundry guide only when humidity control is genuinely relevant, and obtain landlord or professional support where building defects require it.

Audit seller, model and replacement ecosystem

Confirm exact UK model, plug, responsible business, warranty, filter codes and current support pages. Marketplace variants with similar names may use different voltage, filters or app regions.

Use the genuine-shop checklist and preserve the listing, claims and checkout evidence. A discounted discontinued model needs a credible filter supply plan as well as a lower price.

Balanced buying verdict

A strong purchase has relevant particle CADR for the measured room, tolerable noise at the required speed, safe mechanical filtration, practical placement and a documented replacement-filter path. Gas claims require separate evidence.

Delay the purchase when the pollutant source is unknown or when ventilation, extraction or moisture repair is the real intervention. Browse Home & Kitchen for related room and appliance decisions.

Is a portable air purifier the right next step?

A PURIFIER MAY FIT IF…

A remaining particle problem is defined

The room is measured, source controls are in place and verified CADR works at a tolerable speed.

FIX THE SOURCE FIRST IF…

Moisture, fumes or ventilation are unresolved

The device would mask a leak, mould source, unsafe combustion, poor extraction or blocked ventilation.

Balanced verdict

Buy filtered-air delivery you can sustain, not the largest room badge. Match pollutant, room volume, CADR, noise, placement, filters and running cost.

Filtration supplements source control and clean-air ventilation; it does not replace them.

Frequently asked questions

What CADR should an air purifier have?

Choose a relevant particle CADR sized to the measured served room and ceiling height at a fan speed you can actually use.

Does HEPA remove odours and gases?

HEPA is particle filtration. Gases need suitable sorbent media, and particle CADR does not measure gas removal.

Can an air purifier fix mould?

No — It may capture some airborne material but does not remove the water, condensation or building defect that allows mould growth.

Is sleep mode enough for a bedroom?

Only if its undocumented or stated delivery remains adequate for the room; the quietest mode may move much less air.

Are ionisers and ozone generators the same?

Technologies differ, but any intentional ozone production is unsuitable for occupied-space cleaning; demand clear emissions evidence for optional electronic modes.

Methodology and limitations

We reviewed current official UK ventilation and airborne-allergen guidance and US EPA residential air-cleaner guidance on 1 September 2026. We assessed source control, target pollutant, room volume, CADR, particle and gas media, noise, placement, sensors, filter supply, energy, safety and limits. We did not laboratory-test devices, diagnose indoor-air problems or make medical recommendations.

Limitations

Rooms, sources, pollutants, occupants, filters and products vary. Performance claims, prices, filter availability and safety instructions require a check of the current information against the exact UK model.
