Start with a map of the home
Walk each floor and record surface, threshold height, rug edges, cables, curtains, toys, pet bowls, chair legs and spaces under furniture. A robot only saves time in the area it can reliably reach. A three-storey home with narrow stairs may create three carrying and mapping routines, while a single-level flat with open hard floors is close to the ideal case.
Thresholds and rug transitions
Published maximum threshold claims are useful but cannot predict every bevel, loose rug or dark boundary. Measure the highest transition and compare the exact manual. Mop-equipped robots may need to lift pads or avoid carpet; otherwise the owner must remove pads, set zones or accept damp contact.

Do not compare advertised runtime with “automatic”. Track one normal week. Record active minutes spent vacuuming floors, stairs, sofa, car and quick spills. Then estimate which minutes the proposed device can remove without creating new preparation or maintenance.

Yet map quality, object detection, app reliability and firmware support vary, and a robot may still miss corners or narrow gaps.
Mopping features range from a damp pad dragged across the floor to systems with moving pads, clean/dirty water tanks and dock washing. None should be assumed suitable for every sealed wood, laminate or delicate surface. Follow flooring and robot instructions, use only approved cleaning fluid and manage dirty water promptly.
A self-emptying dock reduces bin handling but adds bags, filters, noise and footprint. A washing dock adds water tanks and cleaning. Automation transfers work; it does not remove it.
Privacy, apps and support life
Connected robots can hold maps, room labels and usage data. Some include cameras or remote-view features. Check whether an account is required, where data is processed, whether multi-factor authentication is available, how maps can be deleted and how long security updates are promised. Do not point a connected camera toward private areas without considering household consent.
A cordless vacuum can be mechanically complex but normally avoids account dependence. A robot whose app or cloud support ends may lose convenient features even if basic cleaning continues. Software support belongs beside battery and brush availability in the total-cost calculation.
Consumables and repair costs
For a cordless model, price filters, brush rolls, batteries and any proprietary scent or dust system. For a robot, add side brushes, main brush, filters, mop pads, dock bags and approved fluid.
