AO.com Review: Appliances, Installation, Recycling and Delivery

AO sells washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, refrigeration, cooking, televisions, computing and smaller electricals. Its practical advantage is logistics: seven-day delivery options, installation and old-appliance collection can turn several separate jobs into one order. Yet these services vary by product and checkout, and promotional category pages can mix member price, non-member price, RRP and an estimated delivered total.

This review uses official AO UK listings, delivery, returns, recycling and finance information. We have not bought an appliance, received a delivery or tested an installation. Product performance and user-review scores are not treated as independent test evidence.

AO member price: calculate, do not assume

Category pages frequently show an AO member price beside the ordinary price. In the examples above, the immediate gaps ran from £5 to £39. AO also advertised member delivery benefits and an extended return window of up to 100 days, but membership value depends on the current fee, renewal terms and repeat purchases—not the presence of a coloured label.

List purchases that are genuinely planned during the membership period. Add member-only savings and delivery benefits that apply to those exact baskets, then subtract the fee. Do not count an appliance that might be needed. Check automatic renewal and cancellation. A one-off buyer may be better paying the ordinary price or comparing another retailer.

Model numbers and energy labels

Appliance family names conceal meaningful differences. Copy the full suffix, load, spin, colour and whether the unit is integrated. Two Bosch Series 6 machines may have different capacity, dosing, depth or promotion. Compare EU/UK energy-label data for the selected model, including kWh per 100 cycles, water, eco-cycle duration, noise and class.

A bigger drum can reduce the number of loads for a large household, but routinely washing small loads wastes the supposed advantage. Smart connectivity can provide notifications and remote programme selection; it does not improve cleaning by itself. Delivery: the postcode basket is the evidence

AO advertises flexible delivery seven days a week. Charges vary with date, time slot, location and whether a multi-item order arrives in separate deliveries. AO's current guidance says the exact cost appears at checkout, while next-day delivery and selected time windows can cost extra. Category pages may also show a product price beside an estimated delivered total. Use checkout for the exact postcode and save the selected promise.

Measure every doorway, stair, turn and lift. Record the packaged dimensions as well as the installed size. Clear access and protect floors. If plans change, AO says customers can adjust the delivery date or time through My Account up to 2pm the previous day; changes after the cutoff may incur redelivery cost.

Small items may use Click & Collect with a ten-day holding period. AO says recycling and disposal services and AO Finance are not available with that collection route. This matters if a category-page benefit was part of the decision.

Installation and connection

Availability and price appear in the basket. A connection service is not permission for electrical, gas, plumbing or cabinet alterations. Freestanding machines need safe reachable supplies, sound hoses and a level space. Integrated appliances add door furniture, plinth clearance and cabinet alignment. Download the manufacturer manual and measure before ordering.

If the setup is unsuitable, the team may be unable to connect the appliance even though delivery succeeds. Photograph the existing connections and resolve corrosion, damaged sockets, inaccessible isolation or non-standard plumbing with a competent person first. Confirm whether packaging is removed and what happens to transit bolts.

Old-appliance recycling

AO offers Remove & Recycle with a new order and a separate Collect & Recycle route that currently starts from £30 without a purchase. Its official electrical-recycling guidance also says a customer buying a replacement can take the old item to an AO depot for free within 28 days with the purchase receipt; that is a different route from home collection and should be confirmed before travelling. The practical buyer questions are the charge, disconnection, collection location and whether the old item must be ready when the new one arrives.

Remove personal data from smart appliances and clear water, food and loose parts. If disconnection was not purchased, the terms say the customer must prepare the appliance. Do not leave this until the delivery window. Compare AO’s charge with local-authority collection or retailer alternatives, but confirm responsible WEEE handling.

Returns: 30 days can still cost £49.99

AO says buyers can notify an unwanted return within 30 days. An unused product in original packaging can receive a full product refund, but collection is charged: up to £49.99 for large items and £24.99 for small ones. Eligible smaller items can use Drop at Shop free, subject to a 90 × 60 × 60cm, 25kg limit.

During the statutory 14-day cooling-off period, standard delivery is also refunded, but completed services are not. If a product has been installed, used, loaded with data or had a screen protector removed, AO may reduce the refund. A fully used item is not accepted as unwanted. This makes measuring and model verification before installation critical.

Price matching and finance

AO advertises a price-match guarantee, including sale prices. Its current rules require the identical UK product to be available on the day and exclude in-store-only deals, membership prices, trade prices and obvious errors. A claim can be made before buying or within seven days of receiving the item. A marketplace seller or differently coloured suffix may not be equivalent, so save the competitor listing and complete delivered price.

AO Finance pages currently show a representative 29.9% APR variable example, while selected baskets may advertise six months at 0%, subject to status. Our verdict

AO.com earns its shortlist place through appliance logistics rather than automatic low prices. Its range, delivery scheduling, installation and recycling can create a strong basket, but membership and promotional prices must be calculated carefully. The winning offer is the correct model delivered and connected at a defensible total.
