The Range vs Wayfair UK: furniture orders, delivery and returns
A furniture bargain needs the right dimensions, a clear seller and a delivery and return plan that works in your home.

In this guide
Choose the clearer furniture order, not the bigger catalogue.
The Range and Wayfair are genuine competitors for UK furniture and homeware buyers. The Range may suit an order combining a precisely specified item with a useful local-store route, but its Marketplace goods require a separate seller and return check. Wayfair may suit a buyer who can narrow a large online assortment by dimensions, construction and delivery requirements, rather than relying on a room photograph or an apparent discount.
Our preference is the listing that identifies the item, delivery service and affordable return route most clearly. Neither retailer wins automatically on quality or price across its whole assortment, and a longer advertised return period cannot make an unsuitable cabinet fit through a stairwell.
Compare one furniture job at a time
Start with the missing function in the room: somewhere to put a lamp beside a chair, storage for a defined collection or a dining surface with enough circulation. The separate The Range retailer profile and Wayfair UK retailer profile describe their broader retail services. This comparison focuses on the specification, fulfilment and return decisions that can make a furniture order succeed or fail.
Do not begin with “something about this size”. Write the minimum usable internal space and maximum external footprint, the required load and whether assembly is acceptable. A cabinet with a narrow door opening may have enough headline litres but fail to hold the equipment you intended to store. A side table’s height should work beside the actual chair, not just beside the sofa shown online.
Apply our shortlisting framework to eliminate products that fail the brief before sorting by price. This keeps an inexpensive but unsuitable item from becoming the benchmark against which every usable alternative looks expensive.
The order risks to compare side by side
| Risk | The Range check | Wayfair check | Evidence needed before payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrong item comparison | Separate The Range’s own item from a Marketplace Partner listing. | Match the exact variant, dimensions and included pieces. | Item reference, construction information and package contents. |
| Delivery-cost surprise | Partner deliveries are charged separately; the largest own-range item can determine its delivery charge. | Check the delivery quote and service attached to that item and address. | The complete payable total and stated delivery destination. |
| Furniture cannot enter | Measure the packed item, turns and final location. | Check package sizes rather than assuming flat-pack means small. | A measured route with the required clearance. |
| Unwanted-item return | Use the relevant own-range or Partner process; bulky and Partner goods are not a store return. | Most items have an advertised 30-day return period after delivery, subject to the policy and item exclusions. | An accepted return route and its likely collection or postage cost. |
| Problem after assembly | Record the fault and contact the responsible seller through the order. | Keep the order, instructions and photographs tied to the exact product. | A fault report that distinguishes damage from a preference change. |
These are evidence checks rather than retailer performance scores. We have not ordered matched furniture from the two shops, measured delivery punctuality or compared how their teams resolve the same complaint.
The Range Marketplace makes seller identity important
At The Range, the website explains that a Marketplace Partner item has its sale contract with that partner rather than The Range. The same basket can therefore contain items with different fulfilment and return arrangements. Save the seller information in the order record; a familiar website name is not enough to establish that every item can go back to the nearest store.
The current returns page says Marketplace Partner goods cannot be returned to The Range stores or its Return Centre. Contact the team or the order’s “Contact Seller” route to authorise the appropriate return. That distinction matters especially for furniture, where using the wrong address can create a costly and difficult-to-track shipment.
For Wayfair, read the selling entity and terms attached to the UK order rather than assuming that a supplier name shown in a listing necessarily gives you the same partner-contract arrangement. A product brand, dispatching supplier and contractual retailer can serve different roles; this comparison does not collapse those identities into one.
Construction information is more useful than a styled image
Compare what the furniture is made from, where those materials are used and how the load-bearing parts connect. “Wood” can be an incomplete description if the doors, carcass, shelves and edging differ. A finish description can concern the surface only, not the material beneath it. Search the chosen listing and assembly instructions for the information that answers your actual concern.
Our guide to judging furniture construction explains why joint type, support, hardware and replaceable parts matter. It cannot turn a missing specification into a positive finding, and neither The Range nor Wayfair should receive a blanket quality award because one item has detailed documentation.
Check whether assembly needs two people, specialist tools or a safe means of turning the finished piece upright. Account for wall anchoring where the instructions require it and make a suitable fixing plan for your wall. If that plan is beyond your ability, include competent assembly help in the shortlist cost or choose a different product.
Delivery to the address is not necessarily placement in the room
Record the named service: a courier parcel, doorstep delivery, a two-person service or an explicitly included room-of-choice option. Do not infer carrying upstairs, assembly or packaging removal from the furniture price. A family member being available does not make an unsafe heavy lift acceptable.
The Range’s delivery page, checked on 6 October 2026, says delivery prices vary with location and that Marketplace Partner deliveries are charged separately. Its free-delivery threshold applies to eligible marked items, not every mixed basket. Use the address-specific quote rather than treating the banner as a universal promise.
Wayfair’s delivery information advertises fast delivery on thousands of items, with size and geographical restrictions; it does not promise that every configuration follows that timescale. Inspect the selected product’s delivery estimate and the postcode service before relying on it for an occasion or a room installation.
The furniture access-measuring guide should be used with the package dimensions. Measure door clear openings, bannister restrictions, landings and the turn into the final room. If packaging removal would be needed to clear a corner, ask whether the delivery service permits that rather than making a plan the carrier cannot fulfil.
Compare the delivered item and the exit cost
A hypothetical £180 cabinet with £25 delivery costs £205 before assembly. A £195 cabinet with suitable delivery included is cheaper at that stage, but not necessarily the better cabinet. If the cheaper total lacks the required shelf clearance or needs paid assembly, the apparent win can reverse. These are illustrative sums, not current offers from either retailer.
The total ownership-cost guide helps include the practical costs of setup, care and replacement without inventing a lifespan. For furniture, add the cost of a likely preference return separately so that you can judge the affordability of ordering an uncertain item.
Keep a furniture-order evidence pack
- Save the exact variant, dimensions, materials and seller named at checkout.
- Keep the delivery quote and any promise about carrying, assembly or packaging removal.
- Record the return notification date, authorised destination and collection fee offered for that product.
- Photograph visible transit damage before disposing of the relevant packaging.
- Keep assembly instructions and identify damaged or missing components before improvising a repair.
A return window does not remove return logistics
The Range’s current online returns page tells buyers to notify within 14 days of receipt and then return or arrange collection within a further 14 days, with receipt or collection completed within 28 calendar days. Older help entries use shorter wording, so the current order-specific process and written confirmation deserve priority over a remembered summary. Made-to-order and Partner products need their stated conditions checked.
Wayfair advertises returns for most items within 30 days after delivery. “Most” is an important qualification: check whether the chosen item is eligible, what condition and packaging the process requires, and what the return will cost. Do not translate the larger number into a promise of free collection or permission to use the furniture for a month.
A defect is a different issue from deciding a colour does not suit the room. The UK consumer returns guide explains that distinction, while GOV.UK makes clear that retailer terms cannot remove statutory rights. Report the actual issue with evidence rather than selecting a change-of-mind reason for missing parts or transport damage.
Which furniture-buying route fits?
Shortlist The Range when the seller and route are clear
The exact item meets the construction and access brief, its own-range or Marketplace identity is explicit, and the delivered total remains good value. A local store is helpful only for a service it actually provides; it is not a fallback for every furniture return.
Shortlist Wayfair when filters lead to a documented item
You can identify a suitable variant with adequate dimensions and assembly evidence, and the available delivery and return service fits your home. A broad online choice helps only after unsuitable sizes and unclear specifications have been removed.
Our verdict: favour a verifiable purchase
Both retailers can enter a sensible furniture shortlist, but neither catalogue should replace measurements or a seller check. The Range’s partner distinction is a major transaction detail, while Wayfair’s advertised return window still needs an item-specific cost and condition check. Choose the order you can receive, assemble and, if necessary, return safely; leave a superficially cheap alternative behind when those requirements cannot be established.
Questions about buying furniture from these retailers
Can a The Range Marketplace cabinet be returned to a local store?
The current policy excludes Partner products from store and The Range Return Centre returns. Authorise the seller-specific route through the order before paying to transport the cabinet anywhere.
Does Wayfair’s 30-day window mean furniture collection is free?
The advertised period does not establish the collection charge. Check the selected item’s eligibility, condition requirements and return quotation before making an uncertain purchase.
Should I choose whichever listing has the largest discount percentage?
Use the exact delivered product and a realistic comparison price instead. A different material, size, included quantity or delivery service can make the two percentages irrelevant to your room brief.
Is flat-pack furniture guaranteed to pass my stair turn?
The packages may still be long, wide or heavy, so measure their route individually. The assembled dimensions cannot tell you the size of the largest panel or delivery box.
What should I do if a panel is broken before assembly?
Keep the identifying details and photograph the panel and relevant packaging, then report the damage through the responsible seller’s order process. Do not repair or discard the evidence before getting instructions.

Research method and limits of the comparison
We checked the retailers’ official UK delivery and returns material on 6 October 2026 and compared the purchase evidence needed for an ordinary furniture order. The Range’s current returns page was distinguished from older help entries; Wayfair’s advertised general return period was not extended to every item or interpreted as free collection.
No cabinet or table was ordered, assembled or load-tested for this comparison, and no representative customer-service experiment was performed. Illustrative cabinet totals explain arithmetic only; there is no asserted live stock, promotional price or product-quality winner without an exact item and address-specific quote.
