These examples are a snapshot, not a permanent promise of price, availability or quality.

The sample shows why a useful review needs more than an average. Two £49 reference-price jeans may differ in live discount, stock, denim composition, stretch, rise, seam construction and intended silhouette. A lower sale price does not help when the required size is unavailable or the cut fails the brief.

Sizing: translate the label into measurements

The official women’s guide maps XS to UK 6, S to 8–10, M to 12–14, L to 16–18 and XL to 20–22. That is useful for orientation, but a two-size letter band cannot promise identical ease across fitted knitwear, tailoring and an oversized top. Use numbered sizes where available and read the exact product’s fit description.

Measure bust, waist and hip with the tape level and without pulling it tight. For trousers, record rise and inside leg; for a dress, check bodice length, waist position and total length. Compare the measurement that controls the garment. A fitted woven dress may be limited by bust or hip, while a stretch top may be more forgiving. Do not order several speculative sizes simply because returns exist. First remove cuts, fibres and lengths that cannot suit the brief. If two sizes remain plausible, consider store fitting or order only the smallest sensible test set, retaining tags and packaging.

Petite, plus and product-level availability

River Island describes petite clothing as designed for customers 5ft 3in and under. Height alone does not predict proportion: torso length, rise, shoulder position and leg-to-body ratio still matter. Compare the garment’s actual length and seam placement. A petite trouser can shorten both rise and leg, which may not suit every shorter wearer.

The range page also exposes plus and wide-fit filters, but category counts do not mean every design is available in every fit. Start from the item, then check its live size run. Avoid assuming that a product photograph represents how a different size will drape. The important evidence is cut, construction, fabric behaviour and dimensions.

Materials and quality: inspect before removing tags

Names such as satin, faux leather, cotton blend or sculpt denim describe a look or partial composition, not a complete quality verdict. Read main, lining and trim percentages, then connect them to the intended use. Stretch fibre may improve recovery in skinny jeans but also changes heat, feel and care. An embellished dress can justify a higher price only when decoration, lining and seams survive realistic wear and cleaning.

Value: calculate likely wears, not just unit price

Occasionwear needs a different question: can the garment work for more than one event, and can it be cleaned, stored and repaired sensibly? A delicate £79 dress may be entirely rational for a defined event, but a vague future occasion is not evidence of value. Avoid buying for an imagined life simply because the return window creates temporary reassurance.

Delivery: verify the live checkout promise

Delivery services, thresholds, postcode coverage and cut-offs are volatile. Record the exact route and promised date at checkout rather than relying on a cached banner. A faster service is useful only when the date matters and the basket is eligible; it cannot correct an unsuitable garment.

For store collection, wait for the ready message before travelling and bring the required order evidence. For home delivery, save any agreed safe-place instruction. If the retailer arranged the courier and the parcel does not reach you or an authorised place, contact the retailer rather than accepting an endless referral to the carrier.

Consolidating planned items can reduce delivery cost, but adding an unwanted accessory to cross a threshold is higher spending, not a saving. Compare the smaller basket plus delivery with the inflated “free delivery” basket.

Returns: store is free, postal return carries a cost

The policy checked on 30 August 2026 allowed eligible items to be returned within 28 days, clean, unworn and tagged. Eligible UK store returns were free except at Jersey and Isle of Man stores. The warehouse or portal route carried a £2.95 charge. Keep the receipt, order information and proof of handover until the refund is complete.

Ordinary exclusions included underwear, swimwear without its hygiene strip, grooming products, pierced jewellery and cosmetics with broken seals.
