RESEARCH-LED GUIDE

COS review UK: sizing, fabrics, delivery and returns

COS focuses on pared-back shapes, fabric-led basics and modern tailoring. Its restrained styling can make pieces look permanent, but value still depends on garment measurements, composition, internal construction and realistic care.

QUICK VERDICT

A strong shortlist for modern basics when proportion and fabric are proven

COS suits shoppers who want clean silhouettes and are willing to measure the exact garment. Our October shortlist includes £75 elasticated barrel-leg trousers and £139 pleated wide-leg trousers, illustrating different silhouettes rather than the category’s entire price span. Minimal design does not make fit simple: rise, shoulder position, sleeve and volume can be decisive.

Use the retailer for a defined cut or textile, not a vague promise of timelessness. Our & Other Stories versus COS comparison sets the range against a genuine fashion competitor.

Where COS fits in a UK wardrobe

The range centres on womenswear and menswear with tailoring, shirts, knitwear, denim, outerwear, footwear and accessories. The visual system emphasises colour, shape and cloth, which can help shoppers compare coordinated pieces. It can also hide whether a dramatic volume works on the wearer or whether a seemingly simple garment has the construction expected at its price.

Write a precise brief: a cotton trouser for warm commuting, a wool layer with repairable construction, or a jacket whose shoulder and sleeve work over a named shirt. The capsule-wardrobe guide helps separate a useful neutral from a duplicate.

Dated UK price sample

COS listing observed Category-page price Fit or ownership question
Elasticated barrel-leg trousers £75 Test the waistband while standing and sitting, without pulling out the knee shape
Boiled wool-blend barrel-leg trousers £85 Check textile feel, care and the amount of room beneath a winter coat
Wool-blend wide-leg trousers £95 Confirm the lining description and the hem’s position with everyday footwear
Relaxed twill wide-leg trousers £119 Measure the front rise and leg volume against an owned relaxed pair
Pleated wide-leg trousers £139 Evaluate pleat placement and whether the designed length needs alteration

We observed these prices in the UK trouser listings on 5 October 2026. They are selected examples, with no promise that a particular size remains available; a colour swatch likewise does not confirm identical fabric or stock. Check the chosen variant before treating two listings as equivalent.

Sizing: minimalist shapes still require detailed measurements

An oversized shirt is not simply a larger regular shirt. Dropped shoulders, sleeve pitch, body width and length create its balance. Barrel trousers need waist stability, rise, hip ease, knee position and hem volume. A product can match the body chart yet fail because the garment proportions do not match the wearer or intended styling.

Measure a similar owned garment laid flat and compare equivalent points. Use body measurements only with a body chart; use garment measurements only with another garment. The UK sizing guide explains that distinction. Model height and worn size add context but cannot substitute for your proportions.

Test movement with the intended layers and footwear before removing tags. Do not alter a turn-up, sleeve or waist until the return decision is final.

Fabric terms need complete composition

Cotton, wool, linen and modal describe fibres, not cloth weight, weave, recovery or seam strength. A 100% cotton trouser can be crisp twill, soft jersey or lightweight weave. A wool blend may use the wool for warmth while another fibre changes resilience and care. Open shell, lining, pocketing and trim details.

Read the care label against real habits. A beautiful trouser that needs pressing after every wear or specialist cleaning may deliver poor practical value. Our fabric-composition guide helps convert percentages into use questions.

Construction details worth inspecting

  • Check shoulder seams, sleeve insertion and facing on shirts and jackets.
  • Inspect trouser waistband, zip base, pockets, crotch seam and hem allowance.
  • Look for balanced seams and fabric grain rather than judging only the front.
  • Check button attachment, spare components and whether decoration is repairable.
  • Compare lining length and movement with the outer garment.
  • Record any fault before wear, washing or alteration.

Minimal clothing exposes poor finishing because there is little decoration to distract from twisting seams, uneven topstitching or puckered hems. Conversely, a clean edge can be deliberately raw or bonded; check the intended construction before calling it defective. Use our clothing-quality guide.

Delivery: current UK timing

COS’s delivery information checked on 5 October gave four to five working days for standard orders. The express estimate was one to two days for qualifying orders before 19:00 Monday to Friday, with express unavailable in Northern Ireland. Members were offered free shipping above £50; available methods, costs and arrival dates were determined at checkout.

For a work outfit, work backwards from the day you need to try it on, not the day you need to wear it. Record what checkout promises for the address and leave room for a replacement size rather than assuming an express option will always appear.

Return windows and the processing deduction

The COS returns page at our October check gave a 30-day return period, reduced to 14 days for sale goods. It described a £3 processing deduction and a refund within 14 days of receiving the return. Keep the garment clean and unworn with its tags attached, and follow the digital return instructions for the order.

Make the try-on reversible: leave the hem, waistband and fastenings unaltered until you have decided to keep the piece. Photograph the returned item and retain its parcel record. Our clothing returns guide helps organise the evidence if the parcel or refund needs following up.

Choose COS for shape or documented simplicity

CHOOSE A SHAPE-LED PIECE IF…

The proportions are the reason to buy

You have checked garment measurements, movement and footwear, and the volume creates useful outfits rather than novelty.

CHOOSE A SIMPLE BASIC IF…

The evidence is genuinely simple

Composition, construction, care and replacement role are clear, with no premium paid only for styling language.

Sales, longevity and complete cost

A sale price is useful only after the product passes the same fit and fabric checks. Compare the selected colour, because markdown and stock vary. Our discount guide explains how to preserve the reference price and product identity.

Include delivery, possible return shipping, pressing, cleaning and alterations. Estimate a conservative cost per use with our cost-per-wear guide, then replace assumptions with real wear data.

Minimal styling still requires detailed inspection

A clean product image can make construction appear simpler than it is. Zoom into shoulder seams, darts, pleats, pocket openings, vents, cuffs and hems. A plain garment has nowhere for imbalance or poor finishing to hide, while sculptural volume may depend on fabric body that cannot be judged from fibre percentages alone.

Check whether a jacket, skirt or trouser is fully lined, partly lined or unlined and which fibre touches the skin. Examine spare-button information and how a fastening could be repaired. A concealed zip, unusual press stud or integrated belt can be elegant but may create a less standard repair.

Volume changes the sizing method

Oversized does not mean any size will work. Shoulder drop, cross-back width, sleeve length and neck opening still control comfort and proportion. For barrel or wide trousers, measure waistband position, rise, hip, widest thigh, inside leg and hem. Compare with a garment that creates the intended silhouette, not merely one labelled with the same size.

Length deserves particular attention because a designed crop and an unintended short fit look different. Shoes, coat length and the wearer’s preferred break affect the result. Order the narrowest sensible size set after eliminating unsuitable dimensions; speculative multi-size orders increase temporary spend and return work.

Care and pressing are part of the design

Structured wool blends, fluid viscose cloths and crisp cotton each respond differently to washing, steaming and hanging. Read the exact care line before deciding that a neutral piece will be an effortless basic. If specialist cleaning or careful flat drying is required, include it in the ownership decision.

Do not apply high heat because a crease looks intentional. Follow the care label, protect surfaces and test a concealed area where appropriate. Store shaped tailoring on adequate support and fold heavy knitwear rather than allowing gravity to stretch it. Neutral colour does not reduce the need for compatible laundry sorting.

When a higher price is justified

Price can be justified by a better cloth, more considered pattern, secure construction, useful lining and proportions that work without extensive alteration. It is not justified by minimal branding alone. Compare an exact COS garment with a matched alternative on the same job, season and care burden.

If the item fills a recurring wardrobe role and survives the fit and construction checks, the restrained styling may make coordination easier. If it duplicates two existing neutral garments, the visual consistency is not evidence of need. Record at least three real outfits before keeping it.

Balanced verdict

COS is a credible UK option for clean tailoring and fabric-led basics when the exact proportions, composition and construction are documented. The focused aesthetic makes coordination easy but does not remove fit risk. Measure carefully, read the complete material breakdown and treat the £3 return fee as part of trial cost.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the intended volume of a COS shirt?

Start with shoulder drop, cross-back width and sleeve length on a similarly shaped shirt you own; sizing up a regular shirt does not reproduce the same pattern.

Is COS express delivery available throughout the UK?

The checked express method excluded Northern Ireland, so use the address-specific checkout options rather than building an outfit deadline around it.

How long can I keep COS sale trousers before deciding on a return?

The reviewed sale window was 14 days, compared with 30 for regular purchases; put the shorter deadline in your calendar while the tags are still attached.

Can a COS wool-blend label tell me whether the trousers will feel warm?

The label alone cannot establish warmth: cloth thickness, weave, lining and wind exposure also affect how a pair behaves during your commute.

When should I shorten a COS trouser hem?

First settle the waist, seat and intended silhouette with the shoes you will use; commission a hem change only after accepting the garment and ending the ordinary return decision.

Methodology and limitations

This COS assessment combines UK category prices observed on 5 October 2026 with the retailer’s delivery-method and returns information reviewed that day. We use those published details to frame proportion, material and care checks; we have not trialled the named trousers in daily wear.

Limitations

A listing photograph cannot demonstrate cloth weight, long-term recovery or comfort on an individual body. The selected examples are not an exhaustive price survey, and unresolved size or care details should be answered before a non-reversible alteration.
