THE SHORT ANSWER

Choose the operating system and ecosystem before the camera.

Buy iPhone 17 if you depend on Apple Watch, AirDrop, iCloud or Mac continuity and prefer its lower normal list price. Buy Galaxy S26 if you want Android, a lighter 167g body, fingerprint access, deeper customisation or DeX. Samsung displayed a conditional £100 code on 20 August, so compare the final basket rather than assuming either phone is always cheaper.

This comparison uses official UK specifications and direct manufacturer prices. It does not claim hands-on testing, benchmark results or subjective camera superiority. Battery figures come from different manufacturer tests and should not be read as a controlled head-to-head result.

Before choosing, read our Argos mobile-phone review, screen specification guide and total-cost method.

The dimensions make the comparison unusually clean. Both are 149.6mm tall and their widths differ by only 0.2mm, but Samsung is 0.75mm thinner and 10g lighter. Cases narrow that difference, so compare the complete protected phone rather than admiring bare specifications.

UK price: compare list price with the final promotional basket

Price snapshot, 20 August 2026: Samsung UK listed £879 for 256GB and £1,049 for 512GB, with 12GB RAM and a displayed £100-off code subject to its terms and basket acceptance. Apple UK listed £799 for 256GB and £999 for 512GB and stated that an unconnected direct purchase is unlocked. John Lewis also showed both 256GB phones at £879 and £799 respectively, although colour-level availability varied. Promotions, trade-in quotes, finance and stock can change at any time.

A trade-in banner is not a universal discount. Its value depends on model, capacity and condition, and may change after inspection. Compare cash handset prices first, then enter the same old phone into both official estimators. If the old handset could be sold privately for more, include the extra work and risk. Never stretch a contract merely to make the monthly figure look similar.

Neither manufacturer includes every accessory a new owner might need. Samsung lists the phone, data cable and eject pin, with no travel adapter. Apple fast charging also relies on a separately available suitable adapter. Add a case, screen protection, charger, cloud storage and insurance only if you will actually buy them. Our ownership-cost guide provides the calculation.

Android or iOS is the biggest practical difference

Galaxy S26 runs Samsung's One UI over Android. It allows broader default-app choices, home-screen control, file handling and interaction with Windows or Google services. Samsung DeX can place a desktop-style workspace on a compatible display, useful for presentations, remote access and light work. Check the required cable, display and app behaviour before treating DeX as a laptop replacement.

iPhone 17 runs iOS and becomes most persuasive beside a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods. AirDrop, iCloud Keychain, Handoff, Find My and shared services reduce friction for an established Apple household. Apple Watch requires iPhone, so moving to Galaxy may also mean replacing a watch. Conversely, a mixed Windows and Google household may gain little from paying to enter that ecosystem.

Switching tools move contacts, photos and some messages, but not every app purchase, password, accessory, chat history or authentication setup. Banking apps and two-factor authenticators deserve a written migration checklist. Keep the old phone working until essential accounts are verified. Ecosystem lock-in is not automatically bad when it saves time; it is a cost when it prevents choosing a better future device.

Displays: both now cover the flagship basics

Both phones offer a 6.3-inch OLED-class display with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, so smooth scrolling is no longer a Pro-only Apple advantage. Apple specifies 2622×1206 pixels, always-on display, anti-reflective coating and up to 3,000 nits outdoor peak. Samsung describes a 6.3-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with adaptive 120Hz. Peak brightness numbers require their test conditions and should not be compared casually.

Display preference includes more than resolution. Text scaling, colour management, pulse-width dimming sensitivity, minimum brightness and reflections affect daily comfort. Visit a shop with both phones at matched brightness, disable demo mode if permitted and open the kind of text you read. Our screen guide explains why peak brightness is not normal sustained brightness.

The S26's 10g saving is noticeable on paper and may matter during long reading sessions, but a rugged case can add far more. iPhone 17 is slightly narrower; Samsung is thinner. Neither is genuinely small by older standards. Buyers with limited reach should test keyboard access, back gesture, Control Centre or Quick Settings one-handed.

Battery and charging: the headline is a draw, the routines differ

Each manufacturer claims up to 30 hours of video playback. That coincidence does not establish equal endurance: screen brightness, network, codec, application and laboratory method differ. Samsung states a 4,300mAh typical capacity; Apple does not use capacity as its main consumer comparison. Capacity across different operating systems is not a runtime score.

Apple says iPhone 17 can reach 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher adapter and cable, or 50% in 30 minutes with a 30W-or-higher adapter and MagSafe Charger. Confirm Samsung's current wired and wireless charging specification on the exact UK model before buying a new adapter. A charger displaying a high wattage does not guarantee the phone accepts it at that rate.

For a realistic comparison, look for independent tests using the same network and tasks, then allow for battery ageing. Navigation, mobile hotspot, gaming, video capture and weak 5G can be harsher than local playback. Our battery claims guide shows how to read “up to”.

Security, unlocking and software support

Samsung provides an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor and face recognition; Apple centres authentication on Face ID. Fingerprint access can be convenient on a desk or when part of the face is covered. Face ID integrates consistently with Apple Pay and supported apps. Try the interaction rather than choosing by theoretical security alone, and keep a strong passcode.

Samsung says Galaxy mobile security updates may be supported for up to seven years, but the exact start, frequency and scope belong to the model's published policy. Apple does not usually market a fixed number of major iOS upgrades for each new iPhone. Its current support record is useful context but not a contractual future count. This makes a neat “seven versus five” table misleading.

Long support has value only if the battery, storage and repair economics keep the device usable. Check local repair prices, parts availability, warranty and backup method. Read our device-support guide and UK warranty guide before assuming premium phones are maintenance-free.

Storage, SIM and connectivity

Both start at 256GB and offer 512GB, which removes the old problem of comparing different base capacities. Neither should be bought on the assumption of later microSD expansion. Estimate current photo, video, downloads and offline music use, then add growth. Cloud storage can reduce local pressure but creates a recurring cost and does not make every original instantly available offline.

Apple's direct SIM-free handset is unlocked. iPhone 17 supports nano-SIM and eSIM in relevant markets; Samsung also offers physical SIM/eSIM arrangements, but exact dual-SIM behaviour can vary by region and carrier. Travellers should confirm whether two lines can remain active, how roaming works and whether their network supports eSIM transfer.

Both offer modern 5G and Wi-Fi, but local signal and router support matter more than a standard name. iPhone 17's USB-C port supports USB 2 speeds according to Apple's store page. Samsung DeX support makes its port capabilities strategically more useful, but confirm monitor output and accessory compatibility for the intended setup.

Cameras: compare the pictures you actually make

This article deliberately avoids declaring a camera winner without controlled testing. Samsung offers a versatile multi-camera approach and Apple emphasises its 48MP Fusion system, 18MP Centre Stage front camera and video workflow. Megapixels alone do not establish detail, motion handling, colour or low-light consistency.

Identify the job: children moving indoors, pets, concerts, travel zoom, front-camera calls or social video. Find full-resolution samples in comparable light and check skin tone, moving subjects and lens transitions. Also consider editing, backup and sharing. A camera that produces slightly different pixels may still be better for you if its library and family-sharing workflow saves time.

Repair, resale and buying route

Manufacturer stores provide direct finance, trade-in and support routes, while Argos, John Lewis and Currys may offer collection, local returns or retailer-specific guarantees. Match the exact storage, model code and seller. Marketplace stock can have different origin, warranty or SIM configuration even when the title looks familiar. Use our UK shop directory to compare buying routes.

On arrival, check the seal, finish, IMEI, storage and included items before migrating everything. Save the listing and receipt. Consumer cancellation rights for an online order do not create permission to return a damaged or materially diminished phone; retailer inspection policies differ. A genuine fault is handled differently from a preference change.

Who should buy each phone?

CHOOSE GALAXY S26 IF…

Android flexibility and lighter hardware matter

You want fingerprint unlocking, DeX, deeper customisation and strong Google or Windows integration, and those benefits justify the higher direct price.

CHOOSE IPHONE 17 IF…

Apple continuity or lower SIM-free cost wins

You use Apple Watch, Mac, iCloud or family services, prefer Face ID and want to spend £80 less at 256GB on the checked prices.

Our verdict

Our practical verdict: iPhone 17 is the clearer choice at normal list price, while Galaxy S26 is the stronger specialist option for Android flexibility, lower weight and DeX—and may undercut Apple when Samsung's displayed code applies. This is not an absolute quality ranking. Existing devices, paid apps, promotion eligibility and habits can reverse the value immediately. Use our shortlisting guide and score the features you use weekly.

Final buying checklist

  1. Choose iOS or Android based on devices and services already owned.
  2. Compare the same 256GB or 512GB capacity and ignore unconfirmed trade-in estimates.
  3. Add case, charger, insurance, cloud storage and replacement accessories.
  4. Test size, unlocking and text readability in person where possible.
  5. List banking, authenticator, chat and photo data that must migrate.
  6. Verify network SIM/eSIM support and direct-purchase unlocking.
  7. Check the final seller, model code, delivery and return route at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Is Galaxy S26 better value than iPhone 17?

At the listed prices checked on 20 August, iPhone was £80 less at 256GB and £50 less at 512GB. Samsung also displayed a conditional £100 code, which could reverse the 256GB gap if accepted in the basket. Compare final payable prices and the features you will use.

Which phone has better battery life?

Both claim up to 30 hours of video, but the tests are not controlled against each other. Use matched independent testing for your workload and network.

Can I move WhatsApp and photos between Android and iPhone?

Official migration tools support many common data types, but conditions apply and not every app or history transfers. Back up first and follow current Apple, Google, Samsung and WhatsApp instructions.

Do either phones include a charger?

Do not assume a mains adapter is included. Samsung lists a cable and no travel adapter; Apple's fast-charge adapter is sold separately. Check the exact box contents.

Which is better for a Windows PC?

Galaxy generally offers deeper Windows and Android flexibility, including DeX. iPhone can still sync selected iCloud data and use Microsoft apps, but Mac integration is its stronger ecosystem case.

How we compared Galaxy S26 and iPhone 17

We checked Samsung UK and Apple UK product, store and specification pages on 20 August 2026, with a same-day retailer price and availability cross-check at John Lewis. We matched 256GB and 512GB SIM-free configurations, then compared dimensions, weight, display, battery claims, charging, authentication, software, ecosystem, connectivity, box contents and support implications. We did not buy, benchmark or photograph either phone.

Limitations: prices, promotion eligibility, trade-in values, colour-level stock, software and network support change. Confirm the exact UK model, seller, specification and final basket before payment. Manufacturer battery claims use different methods and are not a controlled head-to-head test.
