Marks & Spencer Fashion Review: Quality, Sizing and Returns

This review covers the UK M&S clothing offer rather than food, banking or a single seasonal collection. Is M&S clothing good quality?

There is no responsible one-word answer. M&S sells several own-label tiers, varied product types and third-party brands, so a strong cotton shirt does not establish the quality of a viscose dress or a fashion trainer. Judge the particular garment using fabric, seams, hardware, cut and care requirements.

For a woven shirt, look for smooth seam allowances, secure buttons, aligned plackets and a collar that lies cleanly. For trousers, inspect pocket bags, fly construction, belt loops, hem depth and whether the fabric recovers after being gently stretched. Price can fund better material or finishing, but it can also reflect fashion positioning. Compare two garments side by side rather than assuming Autograph, Per Una or another sub-brand is automatically superior. A £46 shaping jean may be excellent value for someone who wears it weekly and finds the cut difficult elsewhere; it is poor value if the shaping panel feels restrictive and leaves the wardrobe after two outings.

Sizing: use measurements, then account for cut and fabric

The official women’s tops chart spans UK sizes 6 to 30, with body measurements and international conversions. M&S itself notes that fit varies according to cut, style and fabric. That qualification matters: two items carrying size 12 can feel different when one is rigid woven cotton and the other contains stretch, or when one is deliberately oversized.

Measure the body in light clothing, then compare a well-fitting garment laid flat. For jeans, record waistband, front rise, back rise, hip width and inside leg. Do not use waist circumference alone: a curved or barrel silhouette distributes ease differently from a straight leg. Petite, regular and long labels also need the numerical length on the specific listing.

Fabric composition matters more than collection names

Read the fibre percentages for the exact colour because blends can change between variants. Cotton can feel breathable and familiar, elastane can improve recovery, polyester may add resilience and quick drying, while viscose can drape softly but may need more careful washing. None is automatically good or bad; suitability depends on the garment and use.

For an everyday shirt, ask whether the fabric is opaque, comfortable and realistic to care for. For jeans, a small stretch content can improve comfort but may change how the knee and seat recover. Care cost belongs in the decision. A low purchase price loses its advantage if a garment requires frequent specialist cleaning or cannot tolerate the household’s normal wash routine. Read the sewn-in label before removing tags and use our care-label guide to decode the symbols.

Delivery and collection

M&S offers home delivery and collection options, but the eligible method and cutoff depend on the item, stock location and postcode. The current returns information identifies £3.99 as the standard delivery charge when explaining delivery-fee refunds. Treat that as a dated reference, not a universal basket promise.

Store collection can reduce missed-delivery risk and makes it easier to check sizing promptly. Wait for the ready message and verify the collection location; Food-only and franchise formats do not necessarily handle clothing orders or returns in the same way as a full Fashion, Home & Beauty store. Multi-brand marketplace items can also follow product-specific arrangements.

Existing Sparks Delivery Pass holders may continue until their stated expiry, but M&S says new sales and renewals stopped from March 2026. Do not value a historic delivery benefit as though it remains available to a new member.

Returns: full-price and sale items follow different clocks

The official help page checked states a 35-day standard goodwill returns period for full-price online and store purchases, subject to exclusions and original condition. Online sale items have a shorter process: notify M&S within 14 days, then return within the stated further period. Because M&S has changed wording before, the order account and current policy should be checked again on publication day.

Garments should be unworn and unused. Multipacks must be returned together, hygiene seals must remain intact where relevant and a promotional free item may need to come back with the qualifying purchase. This goodwill policy is separate from statutory remedies for goods that are faulty, misdescribed or not of satisfactory quality.

Free online returns can be started through the account and routed to an eligible store, Royal Mail or Evri. A main clothing store is normally the quickest route, but outlet and Food-only locations have restrictions. Keep proof and track the parcel until the refund arrives. Sparks: useful extras, not a reason to overspend

Sparks is not a simple points-per-pound scheme. M&S describes personalised offers, treats and occasional giveaways, with availability and eligibility changing. Evaluate the garment at its ordinary price first. An offer has value only when it applies to the planned item and does not encourage an unnecessary second purchase.
