John Lewis Mobile Phones Review: Guarantees, Trade-In and SIM-Free Buying

The range covers current Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models, selected Nothing phones and certified refurbished devices. Listings normally identify storage, colour, included cable, cellular generation and guarantee. That helps, but one product family can span hundreds of pounds: storage, screen size, camera hardware and promotional conditions must match before prices are compared.

This review uses John Lewis product, delivery, return and trade-in information checked on the date above. We have not ordered a phone, tested a handset or used its customer service. Manufacturer performance claims are treated as specifications, not independent test results.

How to compare the phone rather than the promotion

Start with software support, storage and battery suitability. A cheaper phone that stops receiving security updates early or requires paid cloud storage may cost more over its useful life. For family photos and offline video, 128GB can fill quickly; for a carefully managed user, 256GB may be unnecessary. Then check the display and physical size. A larger screen improves reading and video but may be awkward one-handed. Camera megapixels do not establish consistency in indoor light, moving subjects or video. Use manufacturer sample galleries carefully and seek independent testing for performance. John Lewis customer ratings can expose usability themes, but do not prove laboratory battery life or failure rate.

Finally inspect what is included. The checked listings include a USB-C cable but not necessarily a mains charger. Add the correct charger and case to the comparison only if needed; a cheap unverified charger is not a sensible saving.

The two-year guarantee: useful, not unlimited

John Lewis mobile listings checked for Apple, Samsung and Google display a two-year guarantee. This is a meaningful differentiator when another retailer offers only the manufacturer’s shorter standard cover, but the guarantee document—not the badge—defines exclusions and claim handling.

A guarantee does not normally turn accidental drops, liquid damage, cosmetic wear or depleted consumables into manufacturing faults. It also does not replace statutory rights when a phone is faulty, misdescribed or not fit for purpose. Before handing over a faulty phone, back up data where possible, remove payment cards and account locks, and record the device condition. Ask whether diagnosis may erase the handset and whether the remedy is repair, replacement or another settlement.

John Lewis trade-in: quote and bonus are separate

John Lewis Trade-In is provided by Likewize. The service asks the customer to identify the old device and condition, accept a quote, package it and post it for inspection. The current help page says a standard quote is valid for 14 days, with a possible seven-day extension by email. If the phone arrives in the declared condition within the period, the full quoted value is paid; if inspection differs, Likewize can revise the offer and the customer may accept it or request the device back free.

Enhanced promotions add another layer. They apply only to named new devices, qualifying old phones, minimum inspected values and precise purchase, receipt and claim deadlines. For example, the Pixel enhanced offers displayed earlier in August ended for new purchases on 11 August 2026. A page or search result that still mentions the bonus is not enough to claim it on a later purchase.

Before sending an old phone, photograph it powered on, record IMEI and serial number, back up, sign out of Apple or Google accounts, remove SIM/eSIM and perform the correct erase process. Package it securely and retain postage evidence. Compare the guaranteed inspected value with reputable recycling services and a realistic private-sale net return.

Delivery and Click & Collect

Eligible phones show standard, next-day, named-day or promotional free-delivery options. The product page and checkout determine the available service for the address. A promotional code may be required, so capture the final basket rather than relying on the category-page label.

John Lewis Click & Collect can use participating John Lewis and Waitrose locations and other collection points. Its current guidance says orders placed before 8pm may be available after 3pm the next day where offered. Wait for the ready message before travelling. John Lewis stores hold a collection for seven days; other networks have different holding periods.

Collection is helpful for an expensive compact item because it avoids an unattended parcel, but identity rules matter. Bring the order number and required identification; a credit-agreement purchase must be collected by the buyer.

Returns: do not set up a phone you may reject

John Lewis says unwanted items may be returned free within 30 days. The item must be unused with labels and tags intact. For phones, computers and other technology, it must not contain personal data or have been registered with the manufacturer. That wording makes the inspection decision important: opening, activation, account registration and data transfer can undermine a change-of-mind return.

Before setup, verify colour, storage, model, seals and physical condition. If unsure about size, handle a display model first. A genuine fault is different from changing your mind; document it promptly and use the correct remedy. Our UK returns guide explains the distinction.

Certified refurbished phones

John Lewis also lists supplier-direct refurbished phones, including Loop-branded iPhones. A checked listing described an iPhone 15 Pro as certified refurbished, with minimum 80% battery health and a two-year guarantee. That can reduce the entry price, but “excellent” condition is not the same as new.

Confirm battery-health threshold, cosmetic grade, replacement parts, accessories, water-resistance implications, seller/fulfiller and return route. Compare the refurbished price with a new previous-generation model. A £50 saving may not justify unknown battery wear; a larger difference with a strong guarantee may.

Finance: compare total repayable

John Lewis shows multiple payment plans on selected products. Its representative example for 24.9% APR states that a £1,000 product over three years would total £1,382.76. Other products show 9.9% or interest-free examples. Availability is subject to status and the exact product.

John Lewis is a credible SIM-free phone retailer when the exact cash price is close to the market and the included two-year guarantee or collection network matters. It should not win automatically: finance can be expensive, trade-in bonuses are date-sensitive and an opened registered phone is difficult to return as unwanted.
