Hobbs review UK: workwear sizing, alterations, delivery and returns
Hobbs can be a useful shortlist for tailored workwear, dresses, coats and event-ready separates, but premium positioning does not guarantee the right block or construction. Compare the exact garment, likely alteration, care and current return channel.

In this guide
Strongest when a structured garment solves a repeated work or occasion role
Consider Hobbs when shoulder, waist, length, fabric and care suit frequent use and any alteration is technically sensible. Check the current delivery promise and return route before changing a hem, sleeve or fastening, because alteration normally ends the return-safe assessment.

| Garment | Evidence to save | Fit and alteration test | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blazer | Shoulder, chest, sleeve, fabric, lining and vents | Reach, button, sit; price sleeve work before buying | Sizing up fixes chest but ruins shoulder |
| Work dress | Bust, waist, hip, length, lining and pockets | Sit, stride, layer and map alteration seams | Tailoring costs erase sale value |
| Trousers | Rise, waist, hip, thigh, inseam and hem depth | Sit, bend, shoe and pocket test | Waist-only sizing hides rise problems |
| Coat | Shell, lining, fastenings, weather claim and care | Test over blazer or knit with normal bag | Polished styling is mistaken for weather performance |
Hobbs order checklist
- Define the repeated work or event role.
- Compare current measurements with a similar structured garment.
- Save complete composition, lining and care.
- Identify alteration seams, vents, zips and hem allowance.
- Obtain an alteration estimate before removing tags.
- Confirm seller, delivery and return route at checkout.
- Test indoors in daylight with shoes and layers.
- Keep only when at least three real outfits survive the cost test.
Start with the dress code and frequency
Tailored clothing earns value when it solves a recurring job: weekly presentations, an interview capsule, a formal uniform or several events. Write the level of structure, temperature, footwear and layering before browsing. A polished campaign image can otherwise turn one occasion into a large basket.
Name at least three uses and the supporting coat, shoes and bag. Our autumn capsule guide helps expose a piece that works only with new purchases. Premium price is easier to justify when the garment repeats.
Sizing must be rebuilt for each structured garment
A body chart is a starting point. Shoulder padding, armhole, dart, waist placement, rise, lining and fabric stretch determine the finished fit. Compare a similar garment that already works, using the same measurement points and intended underlayer.
The UK size-chart guide explains ease and garment measurements. Do not size up a blazer only to close the front if the shoulder seam then drops; shoulder correction is usually more complex than a modest sleeve or hem alteration.
Blazer balance is visible in motion
Button the blazer over the intended blouse or knit, then reach, sit and carry the normal bag. Lapels should settle, vents should hang and the front should not pull into strong horizontal lines. Check sleeve length with the shirt cuff and watch.
A tailor may shorten plain sleeves more easily than sleeves with working buttonholes, vents or detailed cuffs. Ask before purchase. An alteration can improve length but cannot reliably rebuild an unsuitable shoulder, armhole or overall balance.
Dresses need seated and layered tests
Map bust, waist, hip and hem against your body, then sit and stride in the intended shoes. Check neckline movement, lining, pocket bulk and whether a jacket changes the shoulder or waist. Photograph front, side and back in daylight.
A hem can be adjusted when shape, print placement, pleats and lining allow. Waist or bodice work may disturb zips and proportions. Obtain a quote and confirm the dress still clears the return decision before authorising any work.
Read every fibre and lining percentage
Wool, cotton, viscose, polyester and elastane can each be useful in tailoring, but they change warmth, recovery, shine, care and comfort. Record shell and lining separately and check whether a different colour uses another blend.
UK guidance requires fibre information. Apply our garment-quality inspection to seams, darts, lining, buttons, zips, vents and hems. A premium label should not excuse puckering or weak finishing.
Care is part of workwear availability
Dry-clean-only clothing can be practical when wears are spaced and the household has a trusted cleaner, but cost and turnaround reduce availability. A washable dress still needs realistic drying and ironing. Follow the exact label rather than a fibre-based shortcut.
Estimate annual cleaning from expected wear and rotation. A lower-maintenance alternative can provide better value even at a higher purchase price when it remains ready for work and is less dependent on specialist care.
Alterations require a return-safe sequence
First inspect and test the garment completely with tags attached. Second obtain a quote based on the actual construction. Third decide whether total cost still makes sense. Only then approve irreversible cutting, stitching or pressing.
Keep the receipt for both garment and alteration. A retailer is not responsible for an independent tailor’s error, while altered goods are unlikely to remain a normal change-of-mind return. Distinguish an original fault from later work with photographs.
Delivery should leave a fitting buffer
Hobbs currently publishes standard delivery and threshold information, but charges, times and promotions change. Use the final checkout for the postcode and basket. Split dispatches are possible, so save each tracking message.
For interviews, weddings or travel, leave time for home assessment, a tailor appointment and a replacement. A next-day offer is not an alteration timetable. The deadline should not pressure the shopper into accepting a poor fit.
Return channel depends on store type
Hobbs currently states a 30-day period for most full-price eligible items and a shorter 14-day period for sale items, with condition and category exclusions. Standalone stores, outlets, concessions and online distribution are not interchangeable return points.
The current UK page describes free returns to standalone stores and a stated postal fee, while some carrier options may differ. Recheck the order-specific route, keep tags attached and retain handover evidence. Our returns guide covers fault evidence.
Concessions and direct orders need separate records
A Hobbs item in a department store can have that store as the seller. The garment may look identical, but delivery, loyalty, return and complaint channels follow the receipt. Record where the contract was made.
Do not carry a direct-site return promise into an independent retailer or concession purchase. If an item is faulty, contact the legal seller and preserve photographs, order reference and description of the problem.
Promotions should not decide tailoring value
A sale reduction can disappear when sleeves, hem, cleaning and delivery are included. Compare total ready-to-wear cost with a better-fitting alternative. Save time-limited terms rather than quoting them as permanent brand policy.
A threshold or welcome code is useful only after the garment passes. Do not add a weaker second item to qualify for delivery, and check how a partial return changes the allocation of discount.
Use a written keep decision
Set conditions before the parcel arrives: fit in motion, fabric, lining, care, alteration ceiling, three outfits and total cost. Test with the actual shoes, underlayer and coat. Keep make-up and fragrance away while tags remain attached.
If the piece passes, save care and alteration notes. If it fails, return promptly through the correct channel. Familiar tailoring language or a low-stock banner should not replace the prewritten standard.
Build a ready-to-wear cost before deciding
The ticket price is only the first number for structured clothing. Add delivery, likely sleeve or hem work, specialist cleaning, replacement buttons and any blouse, shoe or coat bought only to make the garment usable. Divide that realistic total by conservative repeat wears rather than an idealised five-year wardrobe.
Compare the result with a garment already owned and with a simpler alternative that needs no tailoring. Hobbs can still be the better purchase when its block reduces alteration, its construction survives repeated use and it completes several existing outfits, but a sale label should never hide a high ready-to-wear cost.
Choose Hobbs or compare elsewhere?
The structured piece fits a repeated role
Shoulder and balance work, material and care are suitable, any alteration is limited and total cost is justified by realistic wears.
The alteration must rebuild the garment
Shoulder, armhole, rise or bodice is fundamentally wrong, care is impractical or event timing leaves no safe return and tailoring buffer.
Balanced verdict
Hobbs can offer useful polished workwear when the current block and construction already do most of the work. Alter length or finishing details, not a fundamentally unsuitable garment. Compare full composition, care, seller channel and ready-to-wear cost before removing tags.

Frequently asked questions
Does Hobbs clothing run true to size?
There is no reliable brand-wide answer — Structured blocks, fabrics and ease vary, so compare the exact garment with a similar item you own.
What is the current Hobbs return period?
Hobbs currently states 30 days for most eligible full-price items and 14 days for sale items, subject to conditions and exclusions. Recheck the order.
Can a Hobbs online order be returned to any concession?
No — Current guidance distinguishes standalone stores from outlets, department-store concessions and other sellers. Follow the exact order route.
Can a blazer sleeve always be shortened?
Not simply. Buttonholes, vents, lining and proportion affect feasibility and cost. Ask a tailor before purchase.
Should workwear alterations be done before the return deadline?
Only after a complete return-safe fit check and a confirmed quote. Alteration is normally irreversible and can end change-of-mind return options.
Methodology and limitations
We reviewed current official Hobbs UK returns, delivery FAQs and terms, then applied a structured-garment framework covering fit, fibres, lining, tailoring, alterations, care, channels and cost per wear. We did not order, wear or alter products.
Limitations
Products, blocks, prices, promotions, services and policies change. Alteration feasibility is garment-specific; verify the exact construction with a competent tailor and recheck official terms before purchase.
