Dunelm Review UK: Furniture, Curtains, Delivery and Returns
Dunelm combines accessible homeware prices with a deep curtains offer, stores and local collection. Furniture logistics and made-to-measure exclusions deserve as much attention as colour and price.

Dunelm is strongest for practical homeware and window shopping across budgets.
The retailer is particularly useful when you want to compare ready-made curtains, order fabric samples or collect smaller products locally. For furniture and made-to-measure window treatments, measure first and read the return conditions before ordering: customised goods and many made-to-order products cannot be returned merely because the buyer changes their mind.
Dunelm’s range spans bedding, curtains, blinds, furniture, lighting, rugs, kitchenware and seasonal decoration. It occupies a useful middle position in the UK market: more specialist in home furnishings than a general marketplace, but broad enough to furnish several rooms without moving between unrelated retailers.
This review focuses on the decisions that can produce expensive mistakes: matching curtain type and dimensions, judging furniture beyond a product photograph, calculating delivery, and understanding the boundary between the standard returns policy and customised products.
What Dunelm is good for
Dunelm is especially strong in curtains and blinds. Its blackout-curtain category listed hundreds of options when checked, including eyelet and pencil-pleat headings, separate linings, ready-made sizes and made-to-measure services. That breadth is helpful because window products are not interchangeable: heading type must fit the pole or track, width determines fullness, drop affects the finish and lining changes both light control and thermal behaviour.
Furniture and decoration extend from low-cost bedside tables to mango-wood pieces and coordinated bedroom ranges. This makes it possible to compare price levels within one retailer, but the shopper still needs to inspect materials, construction, drawer mechanisms, weight limits, care instructions and assembly. Our guides to judging furniture quality and measuring before buying furniture provide a useful checklist. A coordinated range should still pass the independent checks in our product-shortlisting method.
Dunelm price snapshot
| Exact example checked | Displayed price | What the example shows |
|---|---|---|
| Berlin Blackout Eyelet Curtains | £15–£55 depending on size | A range price is not the price for the buyer’s window. Confirm width, drop, colour and whether one pair covers the intended pole width. |
| Genoa Chenille Blackout Eyelet Curtains | £40–£120 | Texture and colour should be checked with a sample or in store; blackout performance and edge light are separate from fabric weight. |
| Hayes 1 Drawer Bedside Table | £25 | An entry-price reference. Check dimensions, materials, assembly and stability rather than comparing only the number of drawers. |
| Olney Wide 2 Drawer Bedside Table | £99 | The higher price should be justified by useful width, construction and fit with the bed—not simply a coordinated collection name. |

How to buy ready-made curtains at Dunelm
Measure the pole or track, not just the glass. Dunelm’s own made-to-measure terms state that curtain sizing is based on track or pole size and that fullness varies by heading. The same principle matters for ready-made curtains: the listed pair width must provide enough fabric to close with an appropriate gather.
Next confirm heading compatibility. Eyelets need a suitable pole and create a regular wave; pencil pleats can work with tracks or poles using hooks but need arranging. Check the finished drop from the actual hanging point. Decide whether the curtains should finish at the sill, below it or at the floor, and measure at several points where floors or fittings may be uneven.
“Blackout” does not mean a completely dark room in every installation. Dunelm describes typical blackout curtains as reducing light substantially and markets an ultra-blackout range for higher reduction, but light can still enter around the top, centre and sides. Pole placement, curtain overlap and width influence the outcome. A thermal lining may reduce draughts but should not be treated as a substitute for fixing poor seals or damp.
Made-to-measure: useful, but far less reversible
Dunelm offers made-to-measure curtains, blinds and shutters with fabric samples, appointments and optional measuring or fitting. Its current page advertises up to five free samples, UK manufacture for the service and measuring and fitting availability. Samples are important because monitors cannot reliably represent colour, weave or opacity.
The terms are stricter than for ordinary stock. Dunelm says made-to-measure orders are paid in full, cannot normally be cancelled or amended after confirmation, and can be returned only when faulty, damaged, missing or not made to the agreed specification, allowing for stated tolerances. Wider curtains or blinds may require visible fabric joins, and small colour or pattern variation may be inherent in natural fibres or production batches.
Use the sample in the room during daytime and artificial light. Recheck every measurement and heading, note radiators and handles, and ask how pattern matching, joins and lining will appear. If uncertainty remains, the optional check-measure service may be better value than gambling on an irreversible order.
Furniture: inspect construction and delivery access
A furniture product photograph tells little about wobble, drawer travel, veneer edges or resistance to daily use. Read the full dimensions and materials, download assembly instructions where available and check customer images for recurring—not isolated—problems. Measure the route from the entrance to the room, including turns, lifts, stairs and packaging dimensions. A discount only matters after those checks; use our guide to spotting genuine discounts before allowing a sale badge to decide.
For bedside furniture, align the useful top height with the mattress rather than the bed frame. Confirm that drawers can open without hitting a wardrobe or radiator and that a wall-mounted design is suitable for the wall construction. A £25 table and a £99 table solve different storage and durability needs; neither is automatically better value without the room measurements.
Dunelm delivery and Click & Collect
Dunelm currently advertises standard delivery at £3.95 with free standard delivery above £60, and large delivery at £12.95 with free delivery above £300 for qualifying orders. It also advertises free same-day Click & Collect, sometimes in as little as two hours. The exact basket and postcode determine the available option.
Made-to-order furniture delivery is listed at £12.95, with free two-person delivery when qualifying spend reaches £300. For furniture and large items, room-of-choice delivery may be available, but access and safety restrictions apply. Without a serviceable lift, published guidance limits delivery in flats or townhouses to the second floor above ground. Multiple items may arrive separately when lead times differ.
Do not dispose of existing furniture or arrange help until the delivery date is confirmed. Large products cannot be left in an ordinary safe place, and a missed appointment can create delay. Photograph packaging damage before opening and inspect components before assembly.
Returns: the 28-day policy has important exclusions
Dunelm’s change-of-mind policy allows unwanted items to be returned or exchanged within 28 days with a Dunelm receipt or order confirmation, provided they are unused and remain in original condition with packaging, tags and relevant seals intact. For online orders, statutory cancellation rights also apply according to their own rules.
Personalised, custom-cut, made-to-measure and many made-to-order items are excluded from ordinary change-of-mind returns. Dunelm also lists hygiene-sensitive bedding categories that must remain sealed and unused unless faulty. Ex-display or “less than perfect” products and live plants have separate exclusions. Large-item returns may require arranging collection, so the practical cost and route should be checked before ordering.
Faulty, damaged or incorrectly described goods are a different matter. Dunelm states that faults arising within 30 days can be returned with proof of purchase for a replacement or refund. See our guide to UK returns and refunds rather than relying only on the retailer’s goodwill wording.

Our verdict
Dunelm is a strong mainstream UK option for curtains, bedding, practical furniture and decorative homeware. Its stores, samples and collection network improve decisions that are difficult to make from photographs. The main risks are predictable: incorrect measurements, assuming blackout means zero edge light, overlooking delivery access and treating customised products as easily returnable. Buyers who handle those four issues before checkout are using Dunelm at its best.
