A discounted Core i5 badge can hide older silicon or too little memory; an immaculate refurbished machine can still have an ageing battery.

Which retailer is better for a new laptop?

For a straightforward new Windows laptop, Currys often has the simpler proposition. Local stock can be collected without waiting for a courier, and a buyer can see keyboard size, screen proportions and weight in a store even if the exact configuration is not displayed. Its Price Promise may help when an identical, in-stock model is cheaper at an eligible UK retailer.

The word identical is crucial. Currys requires the same make, model number, size, colour and specification, with both products ready for delivery. Delivery, installation, protection plans, paid-membership prices and marketplace sellers are excluded. Retailer-specific suffixes can make a visually similar laptop ineligible. Laptops Direct can be stronger when the required configuration is awkward: 16GB rather than 8GB, a business model, a particular port selection or a price band underserved by high-street stock. Its new products should be compared on the same basis as Currys: exact SKU, manufacturer warranty, delivery, keyboard layout and included charger. Specialist range is valuable only when it solves the brief.

Which is better for refurbished laptops?

Laptops Direct is the more relevant of these two retailers for graded stock. Its range uses A1, A2 and A3 or Excellent, Very Good and Good language. Those labels primarily describe cosmetic condition. They do not prove battery capacity, repair history, screen quality, processor age or remaining software support.

A refurbished machine needs its own evidence row: exact model and processor, cosmetic grade, stated faults, warranty length, charger, keyboard, battery information and return cost. A saving paired with only 30 days of cover may be less attractive than a new model with a year, especially if insured return postage would absorb part of the gap. Conversely, a properly specified recent business laptop at a genuine discount can be much more useful than a memory-limited new model.

Currys may carry clearance or refurbished devices at times, but its mainstream strength remains new stock. Do not force a retailer preference onto the brief. Specification traps to avoid

Processor names without full codes

“Core i5” and “Ryzen 5” cover many generations and power classes. Record the complete code and check credible manufacturer specifications. A higher family label does not guarantee better battery life or performance in the work you do.

Eight gigabytes sold as universal

A cheap basket without a charger

USB-C charging helps reuse accessories, but only when voltage, power and protocol match. Add a suitable charger to both baskets if one listing excludes it. Do not treat an old low-power phone adapter as equivalent.

Display size without display quality

Resolution, brightness, colour coverage, finish, refresh rate and aspect ratio can matter more than the diagonal. Neither retailer’s range filter should replace the exact specification sheet and, where possible, an in-person look.

Delivery, returns and fault handling

Currys advertises free collection for eligible stock. Delivery choices and cost depend on item and postcode. Whichever retailer you choose, inspect before migration. Photograph the box and device, confirm the model and charger, test every port, keyboard key, camera, speaker and wireless connection, and create a battery report. Avoid discarding packaging or making irreversible changes until the machine matches the listing.

How to calculate the real price

1. Fix the minimum specification: workload, processor class, 16GB or 8GB, storage, display and ports.
2. Copy the exact SKU, not just the family name.
3. Add missing essentials, including charger, adapter, storage and delivery.
4. Value warranty and condition honestly; do not assign cash value to vague reassurance.
5. Include return friction, particularly insured carriage for an unwanted refurbished laptop.
6. Ignore unused bundles and compare the cash total with the total cost of ownership.

Final verdict: Currys or Laptops Direct?

Currys is the safer default for many buyers of ordinary new laptops; Laptops Direct is the more interesting hunting ground for specification-led and refurbished value.
