Argos Technology Review: Collection, Argos Plus, Returns and Product Care
Argos can solve an urgent technology purchase through local collection, but compare the exact model, full specification, delivery, returns and optional insurance first.

Argos is strongest when local availability solves a real problem.
Argos deserves a shortlist place for laptops, tablets, televisions, consoles and accessories when the exact model is competitively priced and genuinely available nearby. Click & Collect and Argos Plus can be valuable, but “Lowest Price”, monthly instalments and Argos Care should each be assessed separately.
The technology department combines a large national collection network with home delivery, credit and product insurance. It is easy to search by broad category, yet apparently similar laptop names can conceal different memory, storage, displays and processors. Postcode stock also changes what is practically buyable.
We reviewed official Argos UK laptop listings and current help pages for collection, Argos Plus, returns and Argos Care. We did not buy, collect, benchmark, return or insure a product. Star ratings and manufacturer claims are not treated as independent testing.
Argos laptop price snapshot
| Exact listing checked | Displayed price | What changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Lenovo Slim 3 15.3in, Intel Core i3, 8GB, 256GB | £299, reduced from £449 | Confirm the exact processor generation, display, ports and whether 8GB is sufficient for the planned workload. |
| HP 15-fd0001na Core i5-1334U, 16GB, 512GB | £429, marked “Lowest Price Ever” | Confirm screen specification, ports, battery evidence and whether the memory is upgradeable. The badge is not a market-wide guarantee. |
| ASUS CX14 Chromebook 14in, Intel N50, 4GB, 64GB, blue | £179 | ChromeOS, modest memory and local storage can suit web-first use but are not equivalent to a Windows laptop. |
| HP 14-ep2001na 14in, Intel N150, 4GB, 128GB | £199 | Four gigabytes and 128GB need a light workload. Verify the operating system mode, usable storage and application requirements. |
| Acer Aspire Lite 14in, Intel N150, 8GB, 128GB | £239, reduced from £279 | The extra memory may matter more than a brand name, while storage remains tight. Add any cloud or external drive needed. |

Range and specification: copy the catalogue number
Argos is broad rather than specialist: the same technology section spans basic Chromebooks, gaming PCs, iPads, televisions and headphones. Begin with the task. A school browser device, family laptop and video-editing workstation require different operating systems, memory, graphics and storage.
Copy the complete product title, catalogue number and manufacturer model. Compare the manufacturer specification because a retailer title can omit panel brightness, colour coverage, USB speed, Wi-Fi generation or memory layout. Our product-shortlisting guide and future-proof technology guide help set minimums without paying for unused capacity.
Click & Collect: useful, but stock is local
Argos lets online buyers select an Argos shop or participating Sainsbury’s collection point. The current guide says collection orders are generally held for seven days. Availability depends on postcode and can differ between nearby locations. Do not travel until the ready-to-collect message arrives, and bring the required order information or identification.
A collection point is not necessarily a full Argos store. The return route can differ: goods collected from a Sainsbury’s collection location may go back to that point or any Argos store, while some services and larger products use other arrangements. Inspect the outer package at handover and verify the model before leaving where practical.
Collection has greatest value when it avoids a missed workday or solves an urgent replacement. It should not excuse a materially weaker specification or warranty. Compare with the Currys profile and John Lewis Electricals review using the same model and delivered total.
Argos Plus: calculate the break-even point
Argos Plus currently costs £40 for 12 months. It covers eligible same-day, next-day and standard deliveries at no additional charge when each eligible online or app order totals at least £20. An Argos account is required, items must carry eligibility and the service cannot be used for an in-store order.
List realistic deliveries during the year and their normal fees. The plan breaks even only when avoided charges exceed £40. Do not count free Click & Collect as a saving, and do not add an unwanted accessory merely to reach £20. Eligibility and available slots still depend on the basket and postcode.
Because the membership covers eligible Argos and Habitat online transactions, a household with planned purchases may find more value than a one-off laptop buyer. Check renewal and cancellation terms before joining, then stay signed in so the basket displays eligibility.
Delivery and large technology
Small-item delivery can offer same-day, next-day or standard slots depending on stock and location. Large televisions and appliances may use named-day delivery and separate recycling services. Argos advertises eligible appliance recycling from £14.99 when added with the new product; a television or gadget basket needs its own live check.
For a large screen, measure the carton, doorway, stair turn, stand and viewing position. Confirm whether delivery is to the room, threshold or another point and whether installation or packaging removal is included. Save the chosen slot. Our total-cost framework includes wall mounts, cables, stands and energy use that a card price omits.
Returns: 30 days with a £30 large-item collection
Argos states that customers have 30 days from delivery or collection to return an item. Products collected from an Argos store can go to any Argos store. A small home-delivered item can generally go to a store or use an arranged collection. Delivery fees are refunded only when the entire order is returned.
Large home-delivered products cannot be returned in store. Argos must collect them, and a £30 change-of-mind collection charge applies unless the item is faulty. Made-to-order furniture follows a similar collection route. This matters for televisions: check panel, size and access before irreversible installation or wall mounting.
Keep packaging and accessories until the specification and condition are accepted. Faulty, damaged or misdescribed goods are separate from a change of mind; photograph the issue and use the support route. Our UK returns guide explains the legal distinction.
Argos Care: insurance is not the manufacturer guarantee
Argos Care includes several products provided by Domestic & General. Electrical Product Care can cover accidental damage immediately and breakdown after the manufacturer guarantee ends. Argos says it can be added at purchase or in store within 45 days with the receipt. Monthly Care continues by Direct Debit until cancelled or otherwise ended.
For selected televisions and gadgets above £149.99, a claim excess applies: the current help page lists £25 for a £150–£500 purchase and £50 above £500. Mobile-phone excesses range from £10 to £100 above £100, depending on price. Loss, most theft, installation cost and cosmetic damage are excluded from general electrical cover; the precise policy controls.
Compare premium, term, excess, exclusions, repair limit and replacement basis with home insurance, bank benefits and the included guarantee. Argos Care does not reduce statutory rights. Read our warranty versus guarantee guide before paying for overlap.
Credit and “lowest price” badges
Argos product cards show instalment examples and price badges. Credit is subject to status, and the cash price remains the clean baseline. Record deposit, deferral period, interest, term and total repayable. A manageable monthly number does not make a low-memory laptop suitable.
“Lowest Price” and “Lowest Price Ever” should be read according to the retailer’s definition, not as a claim that no competitor is cheaper. Compare the same catalogue model with other established sellers and include delivery. Use our genuine-discount guide to separate a useful fall from promotional framing.
Who should consider Argos Technology?
Local collection has real value
The exact model is competitive, confirmed ready nearby and backed by a return route you can use without disrupting work or study.
You need specialist advice or a longer guarantee
The specification is complex, local stock is weak, or another retailer offers stronger support, included cover or a better delivered total.
Argos technology checklist
- Copy catalogue and manufacturer model numbers.
- Check memory, storage, display, ports and support.
- Add the postcode before valuing collection or delivery.
- Calculate Argos Plus from planned eligible orders only.
- Read the return route before setup or wall mounting.
- Compare Argos Care by premium, excess and exclusions.
Our verdict
Argos Technology is compelling when national logistics make the correct product easier to obtain, not merely when it is available fastest. The range and collection network are genuine strengths. Specification discipline, return practicality and a separate insurance calculation keep that convenience from becoming an expensive compromise.
