A one-kilogram step sounds small, yet it can change how often a family washes, whether bedding fits comfortably and how much space the appliance occupies. These household descriptions are starting points, not rules. A couple with muddy sports clothing and king-size bedding may use more drum space than a four-person household that separates delicate garments and uses a laundry service for duvets. Keep a simple tally for one week: number of cotton loads, synthetics, delicates, towels and bedding, plus how full the current drum appears.

The rating is normally the maximum mass of dry cotton that can be washed on the capacity programme. A 9kg machine does not necessarily accept 9kg on quick wash, wool, delicates or steam cycles. Programme tables can set much lower limits. Read the manual before using a favourite short cycle as the basis for a purchase.

The £299 10kg example was £10 below AO’s £309 non-member product price for the 8kg model, while the 9kg connected Samsung was £120 above it. That does not make the 10kg machine automatically superior or the Samsung poor value. It proves that shoppers must compare a matched shortlist—similar guarantees, energy use, noise, dimensions, programmes and delivered services—rather than drawing a price curve from kilograms.

Does a larger washing machine waste more energy?

Not necessarily. The UK energy label for washing machines reports weighted energy consumption per 100 Eco 40–60 cycles, water per cycle, rated capacity, programme duration, spin-drying class and airborne-noise information. Compare those figures on the exact labels. Do not assume a 10kg A-rated machine consumes less per wash than an 8kg A-rated one simply because the letter matches; the numeric kWh and litre values do the real comparative work.

A larger drum can reduce total cycles when it allows genuinely compatible laundry to be combined. It can also sit half-empty because colours, fabrics, hygiene needs and programme limits prevent consolidation. Load sensing may adapt water or time on supported programmes, but it does not make capacity irrelevant. Ask whether the household can regularly form an appropriate full load without leaving damp laundry waiting for days.

A fair running-cost comparison

  1. Read the exact label. Record kWh per 100 cycles and litres per cycle for each candidate.
  2. Estimate annual cycles. Use the household’s present pattern, then adjust only when the larger drum will credibly remove a load.
  3. Use the same electricity and water assumptions. Keep tariffs separate so they can be updated.
  4. Include drying. Faster spin may leave less moisture, but fabric and programme limits matter.
  5. Compare duration and noise. A very efficient Eco cycle may be long; overnight use depends on the home and tariff.

What fits in each drum?

Garment-count examples online are rough because a lightweight shirt, heavy hoodie and bath towel have very different dry weights and volumes. Use scales once if you need a reference: weigh yourself holding a typical dry basket, then subtract your own weight. Do not turn that exercise into a target that encourages compression.

Clothes need room to lift and tumble. If the laundry is packed tightly against the door, detergent and water cannot distribute normally and rinsing can suffer. A commonly useful visual check for cotton is enough free room to place a hand at the top of the loaded drum, but the appliance manual is the authority. Delicates and synthetics often need much more space.

An 8kg model can handle a substantial everyday cotton load. Nine kilograms provides another jumper-and-trousers class of headroom, not a magical extra household. Ten kilograms becomes useful when several bath towels, family bedding or accumulated sportswear repeatedly push a smaller drum beyond comfortable loading.

Duvets, bedding and towels

Bulky items are limited by volume, care instructions and wet distribution—not just dry kilograms. A duvet can weigh relatively little yet fill the drum before water enters. Check its care label, the washer manual and the programme’s stated load. Some king-size duvets are better taken to a larger commercial machine even when a domestic model has a 10kg badge.

Do not force an item through the door or wash it when it cannot move freely. An unbalanced wet load may lengthen spin attempts, reduce spin speed or stop the cycle. Wash removable covers separately where instructed. Large absorbent towels also become heavy when saturated; distribute them rather than combining one heavy item with several light pieces.

If bedding is the only reason to upgrade, compare the price premium and cabinet depth against occasional laundrette or service-cleaning cost. A machine should suit the other fifty weeks of ownership, not only one difficult duvet.

Dimensions matter more than the capacity badge

Nominal width is often close to 60cm, but depth varies and manufacturer dimensions may exclude hoses, door projection and the space needed behind. The checked 10kg Beko listing was shallower than the checked 8kg Hotpoint on headline dimensions, another reason not to infer cabinet size from drum capacity.

Measure the route from entrance to final position: doors, turns, steps, worktop height, skirting, socket, valves and drain. Leave the ventilation and service clearance specified by the manufacturer. Confirm whether the door can open past adjacent cabinets and whether a plinth prevents access to the filter.

Spin speed, noise and programme reality

A 1400rpm headline is common in the sample, but the machine may use lower speeds on particular programmes. Higher spin can reduce residual moisture and drying time, although it may increase creasing or be unsuitable for some fabrics. Compare the label’s spin-drying class and the manual, not only maximum rpm.

Noise matters in open-plan homes, flats and evening use. Compare the declared spin noise and class. Installation quality also matters: remove transit bolts, level all feet on a sound floor and avoid hoses striking cabinetry. A quiet specification cannot compensate for poor levelling.

Quick programmes deserve careful reading. Currys stated the checked Samsung’s 15-minute cycle was for 2kg, far below its 9kg headline. That is normal programme logic, not a flaw, but it shows why “15 minutes” and “9kg” should never be combined into an assumption of a full family wash.

Which capacity should you choose?

Choose 8kg when…

You run moderate loads, can wash bedding comfortably under the manual’s limits and value a wide selection of competitively priced models. It is often the rational option for smaller households that wash regularly rather than allowing laundry to accumulate.

Choose 9kg when…

Eight kilograms feels tight several times a week, but a 10kg model would usually be underfilled. It is a sensible flexible middle for mixed towels, children’s clothing and weekly bedding—provided the selected machine’s price, depth and label remain competitive.

Choose 10kg when…

The household repeatedly produces large compatible loads, bulky washable items fit the programme rules and the machine can reduce cycle count. Buy it for a measured workload, not because the badge appears future-proof.
