For most single-screen desks, start with 27-inch QHD.

Choose 24-inch Full HD when the desk is shallow, the budget is tight or a second screen must fit. Choose 27-inch QHD for a useful balance of readable text, working space and ordinary viewing distance. Choose 32-inch 4K when the screen can sit farther away and large spreadsheets, design timelines or detailed images genuinely benefit. A 32-inch Full HD display is physically large but does not create more usable detail.

Monitor shopping often treats size as an upgrade ladder. It is better understood as a fit problem: how much of the desk can the display occupy, how many pixels are spread across it, how far away will it sit, and can the stand place the top edge comfortably? This guide combines those questions with exact current UK examples.

The diagonal does not describe width, stand footprint or bezel. A nominal 32-inch 16:9 panel is about 71cm wide before bezel, while a 27-inch panel is about 60cm and a 24-inch panel about 53cm. Actual product dimensions decide whether speakers, notebooks and a laptop still fit. Curved and ultrawide displays are separate shapes and should not be folded into these estimates.

Dated evidence: official Currys UK listings checked 23 August 2026. The three displayed prices remained £69, £149 and £219; Currys showed delivery or collection availability, subject to location. The £80 step from the checked 24-inch to 27-inch model buys more than three diagonal inches: it also moves from Full HD to QHD and adds a different input mix. The £70 step to the 32-inch example moves to 4K but drops from 100Hz to 60Hz and changes panel type. That is why a size-only comparison can misdescribe value.

Resolution and pixel density: the relationship that matters

Resolution is the pixel grid; screen size determines how widely that grid is spread. Approximate density is 92 pixels per inch for 24-inch Full HD, 109ppi for 27-inch QHD and 138ppi for 32-inch 4K. Higher density can make text and fine lines look smoother, but the operating system may enlarge interface elements so they remain readable.

A 27-inch Full HD monitor has roughly 82ppi. It displays the same number of pixels as 24-inch Full HD, only larger. That may help someone who deliberately wants larger unscaled elements, but it does not add spreadsheet columns or document detail. Conversely, 27-inch 4K is very sharp and may require stronger scaling; not every application handles fractional scaling equally well.

Scaling does not waste a high-resolution screen

At 125%, 150% or another scaling level, text and controls become physically larger while fine edges can remain smoother than on a lower-density panel. The usable workspace changes with scaling, so test the intended laptop and software. Older remote-desktop tools or specialist applications can render inconsistently.

Do not buy 4K solely for a larger spreadsheet. Check that the computer can output the resolution and refresh rate through the selected port, cable and dock. A USB-C socket may carry data, video, power delivery or only some of those functions. Read the exact monitor and laptop specifications.

Desk depth, eye line and stand adjustment

The UK Health and Safety Executive illustrates a standard workstation with the top of the screen level with the eyes, the screen about an arm's length away and directly in front of the user. That is a starting setup, not a medical prescription for every body or display. Text size, eyesight and screen dimensions can require adjustment.

Measure from the likely screen surface—not the wall—to the normal seated eye position. A deep stand can push a 32-inch panel forward on a 60cm desk, making it feel larger than expected. A monitor arm can recover depth, but only when the desk and display support the clamp or grommet, VESA pattern and weight.

Measure the entire footprint

  1. Mark the panel width and height with tape or cardboard.
  2. Add the stand base and rear cable bend.
  3. Place the keyboard where elbows remain comfortable.
  4. Check whether a laptop, speakers or paper must sit beside it.
  5. Confirm height adjustment; budget for a stable riser or arm if the stand is fixed.

A larger screen should not force constant neck rotation. If several applications are kept at the extreme corners of a 32-inch panel, move high-frequency work toward the centre. Two 24-inch displays create more total width and a central bezel; one 32-inch creates one continuous surface. Neither is universally more ergonomic.

Which size suits each workload?

Writing, browsing and general study

A 24-inch Full HD screen can show a document beside a reference window without dominating a small room. A 27-inch QHD screen gives each pane more breathing room and is the better single-screen default when the desk fits it. Thirty-two inches is unnecessary for ordinary essays unless the user values large text or several sources at once.

Spreadsheets, coding and research

QHD adds genuine columns and vertical detail over Full HD. On 27-inch, it balances workspace and density well. A 32-inch 4K screen can hold a large sheet, code editor, preview and communication panel, but only when scaling, desk depth and window management suit the user. Consider whether two physical displays would organise tasks more naturally.

Photography, video and design

Size and resolution help, but colour coverage, calibration controls, uniformity, brightness behaviour and panel surface become decisive. IPS and VA labels describe broad panel families, not guaranteed accuracy. For paid colour work, seek measured independent performance and suitable calibration support rather than inferring quality from 4K.

Gaming after work

Refresh rate, adaptive-sync support, response behaviour and graphics performance enter the decision. The checked 24-inch and 27-inch examples advertise 120Hz and 100Hz, whereas the 32-inch 4K example is 60Hz. Driving modern games at 4K can be more demanding than QHD. Panel type, glare and lighting

IPS panels often offer stable viewing angles, while VA panels often prioritise stronger contrast. Those are tendencies, not purchase verdicts. Coating, backlight, uniformity and implementation vary. Place the monitor so windows and lamps do not create persistent reflections. HSE guidance also recommends arranging screen and lighting to avoid glare. A brighter specification is not a substitute for sensible positioning, and maximum brightness is rarely the best office setting.

Ports, docks and laptop charging

HDMI is common, DisplayPort is useful on desktops, and USB-C can simplify a laptop desk. But “USB-C monitor” does not necessarily mean one-cable charging. Confirm video input mode, power-delivery wattage, downstream USB ports and whether Ethernet or a KVM switch is present. Check whether the supplied cable supports the advertised function.

A 27-inch USB-C monitor can be better value than a cheaper panel plus a separate dock, but only if its charging power meets the laptop's needs. Add every missing cable, arm and adaptor using the total-cost-of-ownership method.

  1. Measure the desk. Record available width, depth and desired viewing distance.
  2. Choose a resolution-size pair. Use Full HD around 24-inch, QHD around 27-inch and consider 4K around 32-inch.
  3. Check the computer. Confirm ports, maximum output and dock capability.
  4. Check the stand. Height, tilt, VESA support and footprint affect daily comfort.
  5. Match the workload. Pay for colour, refresh rate or connectivity only when the work uses it.
  6. Compare the complete basket. Include cables, arm, delivery and guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Is 27-inch too big for office work?

Not when the desk provides an appropriate viewing distance and the interface is scaled comfortably. Measure depth and stand footprint rather than using the diagonal alone.

Is Full HD sharp enough at 27-inch?

It can be readable, but its approximate 82ppi density is visibly coarser than 27-inch QHD. It also provides no more pixels than 24-inch Full HD.

Do I need 4K on a 32-inch monitor?

Not absolutely, but 4K gives a much stronger density and workspace match than Full HD. QHD at 32-inch can suit buyers prioritising larger elements or gaming performance.

Is one 32-inch monitor better than two 24-inch monitors?

Can USB-C charge my laptop and carry video?

Only when both devices and the cable support the relevant video mode and sufficient power delivery. A USB-C connector alone does not confirm either capability.
