Is MyTFS worth £15 a year?

The MyTFS terms checked on 18 August described one annual plan costing £15, available to individuals aged 16 or over in the UK and Ireland. The headline benefit was an advertised 20% discount, subject to fair-use rules and exclusions, alongside free 48-hour UK delivery and samples on qualifying purchases over £40, subject to conditions and availability.

The break-even calculation is simple in theory: at a full 20% saving, £75 of eligible non-member spend produces £15 of gross discount. In practice, compare what a non-member would really pay on the purchase date. A public promotion may narrow the gap; an excluded brand may produce no membership discount; delivery may already be free above the ordinary threshold. Do not count a sample at retail value unless you would otherwise have bought it.

This table is arithmetic, not a forecast of eligibility. Record each non-member and member basket before checkout. If membership changes what or how much you buy, the supposed saving is not clean. The most defensible use is joining for a known eligible basket that recovers the fee immediately, then treating later savings as secondary.

Delivery and collection: distinguish estimate from promise

The checked delivery page listed standard delivery at £3.49 or free over £40, with an estimated three to five working days. Express was £3.99 or free for MyTFS members, estimated at two to four working days. Next-day delivery was £4.99 subject to the stated 8pm cut-off and exclusions. Same-day Click & Collect was free for qualifying stock, while instant delivery was £7.99 where offered.

These routes solve different problems. Standard is sensible when the order is not urgent; store collection can reduce missed-delivery risk when local stock is confirmed. For a fixed birthday or trip, read the checkout promise rather than assuming that “next day” applies to every product, postcode and order time. Wait for collection confirmation before travelling, and retain the confirmation until the parcel is checked.

Returns: preserve the reversible option

The official returns and terms pages checked on 18 August required ordinary change-of-mind returns to include the goods and original packaging. The customer normally pays return delivery unless the goods are faulty or incorrect. The terms said refunds for cancelled goods include the cheapest available outbound delivery contribution and are made within 14 days of the goods, or evidence of their return, being received.

Fragrance creates a practical tension: smelling the product may require opening packaging that the ordinary return route expects to remain intact. Do not assume a disliked scent is faulty. Inspect the outer parcel, product name, concentration, volume, seals and visible damage first. Keep proof of postage and tracking for a postal return. If a promotional gift formed part of the qualifying transaction, check whether it must also be returned. A member discount, free gift or threshold offer can change the refund calculation when only part of a basket comes back.

Reviews, gifts and authenticity signals

Retailer reviews can reveal recurring fulfilment issues, but they cannot tell you whether a scent suits your skin or whether one person’s idea of longevity matches yours. For a gift, certainty about the exact scent matters more than a headline saving. Ask for the complete product name or a photograph of the recipient’s existing bottle without copying a retailer image. The Fragrance Shop is a credible specialist, but its strongest value case is specific rather than universal. It suits a buyer who knows the precise fragrance, compares the non-member and member delivered totals and uses collection or delivery options deliberately. MyTFS can pay for itself, yet the honest calculation includes the fee, exclusions and the risk that membership encourages another purchase.

The safe process is to match concentration and volume, preserve packaging, save the checkout promise and treat preference separately from fault. A large percentage, free sample or premium box should never rescue the wrong scent or an uncompetitive final basket.
