How to compare product carbon-footprint claims: boundaries, units, baselines and verification
Two carbon figures are comparable only when they describe the same amount of product, lifecycle stages, geography, time period and calculation method. Read the boundary and evidence before treating a smaller number as the greener purchase.

If a seller will not show that information, treat the carbon number as context rather than a deciding metric.

Translate the claim into a complete sentence
Rewrite the label or advert without slogans: “This footprint is X kilograms of carbon-dioxide equivalent for one defined unit of this product, covering these lifecycle stages, using data from this period.” If any blank cannot be filled from information available before purchase, the figure lacks the context needed for a confident comparison.
A carbon footprint is not a total environmental score. It does not automatically describe water use, biodiversity, pollution, toxicity, resource depletion, durability, repairability or labour. - Exact headline wording and where qualifications appear.
- Footprint value, unit and whether it is CO2e.
- Functional unit: item, kilogram, wash, serving, year or another service.
- Lifecycle boundary and material exclusions.
- Primary data, secondary estimates, geography and data year.
- Baseline used for any reduction percentage.
- Role of renewable certificates, offsets or avoided-emission assumptions.
- Method owner, report date, verifier and assurance scope.
Understand what CO2e means
Carbon-dioxide equivalent, commonly written CO2e, converts the warming effect of several greenhouse gases into a common unit using stated factors. A product figure may therefore include more than carbon dioxide. That helps aggregation, but it does not make every calculation identical. Different assessment periods, databases and modelling choices can change the result.
Check whether the figure is expressed in grams, kilograms or tonnes and whether it applies to the product, packaging, shipment, use cycle or business. A visually small number may simply use a smaller denominator. Do not confuse a reduction percentage with an absolute footprint.
Find the functional unit
The functional unit defines what service is being compared. One reusable item can have a higher manufacturing footprint than one disposable item but a lower footprint over a specified number of uses. A detergent claim per bottle cannot be compared directly with another claim per wash until concentration, dose and number of washes are reconciled.
Useful units reflect the buying question: per usable litre, per wear, per wash, per year of service or per delivered function. “Per product” can conceal different sizes and capacities. Conversion is only legitimate when the missing quantities come from reliable, compatible evidence rather than assumptions made to force a ranking.
Compare lifecycle boundaries line by line
A cradle-to-gate study may stop when the product leaves the factory. A cradle-to-grave study may include raw materials, manufacture, distribution, use and end of life. Even two studies with the same label can model transport, consumer behaviour, recycling credits and disposal differently.
The CMA’s Green Claims Code says businesses should consider the full lifecycle and make limits clear. A claim focused on manufacturing can be legitimate if it is explicitly limited, but it should not imply that the whole product has the same advantage. If use-phase electricity dominates one appliance, excluding use can reverse the practical conclusion.
Check assumptions about use and lifespan
Footprints for appliances, clothing and reusable goods often depend on assumed life, repair, wash temperature, energy mix, loading, maintenance and disposal. Ask whether those assumptions resemble your household. A long modelled lifespan is not persuasive if spare parts are unavailable or the product is unsuitable for the task.

Identify the baseline behind “lower”
A claim of “30% lower” is incomplete without the comparator, time period and calculation basis. It might mean lower than the previous model, the company’s average, a selected competitor, an industry baseline or a hypothetical design. Confirm that the compared products deliver the same function and that the baseline was not chosen simply because it produces a large percentage.
Ask whether the reduction is absolute per functional unit or occurs only after a change in sales mix. Check that the baseline method was recalculated if the new method changed. A percentage can be mathematically accurate while the implied purchasing conclusion is misleading.
Separate reductions, avoided emissions and offsets
A direct reduction occurs within the assessed footprint, such as lower material use or less energy in manufacture. Avoided emissions estimate what did not occur compared with a counterfactual. Offsets finance or claim reductions elsewhere. These are different propositions and should not be blended into one unexplained “zero” number.
For “carbon neutral” or “net zero” wording, look for the gross footprint before offsets, the amount reduced directly, the amount offset, the scheme, vintage and permanence assumptions. Current ASA/CAP guidance warns against unqualified claims and says consumers need the basis close enough to the headline to inform the decision.
Inspect data quality and date
Primary data comes from the actual process or supplier; secondary data may come from industry databases or averages. Both can be useful, but the report should explain which was used and where uncertainty is material. A precise decimal does not prove equally precise inputs.
Look for the inventory period and publication date. Electricity generation, suppliers, transport and product design change. Understand verification without worshipping a badge
Independent assurance can test whether a calculation follows a named method and whether evidence supports the reported figure. It does not necessarily certify that the product is low carbon, environmentally superior or suitable for you. Read the assurance statement: what was checked, to what level, for which period and with which exclusions?
A logo is weak evidence when the scheme owner, standard, criteria and current registration cannot be found. Search the scheme’s own register rather than trusting an image on the seller’s page. Compare like with like in a worksheet
Create one row per product and columns for functional unit, boundary, stages, data year, geography, method, gross footprint, offsets, verifier and uncertainty. Leave unknown fields blank. Do not fill them with friendly assumptions. If the two rows do not align, the correct result may be “not comparable from public evidence”.
Where data can be normalised safely, show the calculation and keep the original figures. Sensitivity-test the assumptions that matter, such as life, energy use or number of uses. Keep carbon evidence in proportion
A low footprint does not rescue a product that is unsafe, unsuitable or likely to be replaced quickly. Meet the functional brief first, then use comparable footprint evidence to distinguish credible finalists. Avoid buying an unnecessary item merely because its advert describes a reduction.

A product used well and kept longer may produce a better real-world outcome than a nominally lower-footprint option that fails the household brief.
Give the claim decision weight when
- The functional unit and lifecycle boundary match.
- Methods, dates, assumptions and exclusions are disclosed.
- Gross emissions are separate from offsets.
- Independent assurance covers the relevant figure.
Treat the claim as context only when
- The number lacks a denominator or baseline.
- One product excludes important lifecycle stages.
- A badge has no accessible criteria or register.
- The seller offers a slogan instead of evidence.
Balanced verdict
A product carbon footprint becomes useful only after its unit, boundary, baseline and method are visible. The smallest headline is not automatically the smallest comparable footprint, and carbon alone is not a complete environmental verdict.
Reward businesses that show gross numbers, limitations, dates and assurance. When material fields remain missing, record “not comparable” and choose on stronger evidence such as suitability, durability, repair and total ownership rather than manufacturing confidence from a decorative badge.
