THE SHORT ANSWER

Boots for breadth and service integration; Superdrug for a lean beauty basket when its terms fit

Choose Boots when pharmacy-linked convenience, store access or its exact brand range matters; choose Superdrug when an identical eligible basket is cheaper and its £20 member delivery threshold or free standard return removes a real cost. Ignore headline points until the cash basket has been matched line by line.

This is a desk-based comparison of official UK pages. Recommended Today did not place an order, test products, visit stores or assess support. Product suitability, reactions and shade match are personal; pharmacy and marketplace transactions can follow different rules.

Compare the exact beauty basket

Retailer breadth is not a price. Write down the full brand, product name, size, shade, formula and seller for every line. A 30ml serum and a 50ml serum, an ordinary moisturiser and an SPF version, or two similar mascara names are not direct matches. Marketplace stock must not be compared as though the retailer itself supplies and accepts the return.

A fair six-line basket record

  • Full product identity, size, shade and product reference.
  • Named seller and dispatch party for each item.
  • Public cash price before loyalty or voucher assumptions.
  • Member price or points that will genuinely be used.
  • Delivery, collection and plausible return charge.
  • Seal, hygiene and marketplace restrictions affecting reversibility.

Use the same-day total, because both retailers rotate promotions. A percentage is not a winner when the starting price, pack size or shade differs. Our genuine-discount guide explains the evidence to save, while beauty cost per use prevents a large pack becoming false value.

Range: breadth versus the specific product

Boots combines beauty with pharmacy, healthcare, fragrance, baby, electrical beauty and services. That can reduce separate trips and parcels, but regulated medicines and specialist services do not behave like ordinary cosmetics. Superdrug combines beauty, toiletries, own-brand lines, pharmacy-related categories and a marketplace. Its range can be compelling for a focused basket, yet the marketplace creates seller-specific delivery and return routes.

Do not award either retailer a general “better brands” score. Start with the required item or function, then check stock in the relevant size and shade. Exclusive bundles can be useful, but compare the quantity you will use rather than the advertised bundle value.

Loyalty: cash value, restrictions and behaviour

Boots states that Advantage Card customers receive points and can access Price Advantage offers when a registered card is presented or the customer is logged in. Points are not cash, cannot be spent on every category, and returns reverse points earned. A member price matters only when the exact product is wanted and a non-member alternative is less attractive.

Superdrug’s Health & Beautycard can unlock member pricing and, on the checked delivery page, free standard delivery from £20 rather than £25. That £5 threshold difference matters only for baskets between those amounts. Spending £4 on an unwanted item to avoid a £3 delivery fee loses money.

The table isolates published standard-delivery thresholds; it does not include excluded products, marketplace parcels, faster services or a promotional code. Confirm the final checkout before drawing a conclusion.

Delivery and collection

Boots’ page checked on 19 August listed standard delivery at £3.95 or free from £25 and Click & Collect at £1.50 or free from £15 for qualifying online orders. It noted exclusions including prescriptions, gift products and third-party services. Superdrug listed standard delivery within four working days at £3, free from £25 for non-members or £20 for registered members.

Marketplace goods can arrive separately and follow seller timings. Save the seller, promised date and delivery route at checkout. Collection is useful only after the ready message arrives and the store is practical to reach. For a missed or misdelivered parcel, start with the contracted retailer or seller and preserve the complete evidence trail.

Returns and opened beauty products

Superdrug’s direct-stock policy stated 28 days for unused, resalable items in original packaging, with free Evri returns for qualifying direct products. Marketplace products must go directly to the seller, while third-party supplied products can have their own instructions. The policy excludes medicines, perishables, personalised goods and unsealed hygiene-sensitive products unless faulty, damaged or incorrect.

Boots also distinguishes ordinary products from hygiene-sensitive, pharmacy and supplier-dispatched routes. Inspect shade, size, seal and damage before opening. Disliking a scent, texture or shade is not automatically a fault. Our cosmetics returns guide separates cancellation from faulty-goods rights, and the patch-testing guide covers cautious use.

Preserve the return option

  • Confirm seller and return address before payment.
  • Inspect the parcel and product seals on arrival.
  • Do not open several alternatives at once.
  • Photograph leakage, damage, wrong shade or wrong size promptly.
  • Retain order summary, card and carrier handover proof.
  • Check how returned points, gifts and threshold offers are recalculated.

When a mixed basket changes the result

A one-product price lead can disappear when the rest of the intended basket is added. Record each item’s exact size, shade and seller, then group only products that can use the same delivery and return route. Pharmacy goods, supplier-dispatched lines and marketplace purchases may arrive separately or exclude a promotion. Compare the total cash leaving the account today, the realistic collection effort and the number of return parcels. Do not add a backup shade, travel size or promotion filler merely to unlock delivery or points.

Who should choose which retailer?

Choose Boots if…

  • Your exact brands, services or mixed health-and-beauty basket are stronger there.
  • A nearby store or collection route saves meaningful effort.
  • Price Advantage changes an intended product, not your shopping list.
  • The named seller and return route are clear.

Choose Superdrug if…

  • The identical basket is cheaper after delivery.
  • Your registered £20 member threshold genuinely removes a charge.
  • Free eligible postal returns reduce a likely risk.
  • Every marketplace line has acceptable separate terms.

Our verdict

Boots is the stronger broad destination; Superdrug can be the sharper choice for a focused eligible basket. The winner changes by brand, seller, promotion, collection need and return risk. Match products exactly, then compare cash totals before allowing points to influence the decision.

Superdrug’s lower member delivery threshold and free qualifying returns are tangible; Boots’ breadth and service network can be equally practical. Neither advantage excuses opening hygiene-sensitive items before checks or treating marketplace goods as ordinary retailer stock.

Frequently asked questions

Is Boots cheaper than Superdrug?

Not consistently. Match exact size, shade and seller, then include delivery and usable member pricing on the same day.

Which has the lower free-delivery threshold?

On 19 August 2026, both showed £25 for ordinary standard delivery, while registered Superdrug Health & Beautycard members had a stated £20 threshold. Exclusions apply.

Are Superdrug online returns free?

Eligible direct-stock UK returns via Evri were described as free. Marketplace, third-party, oversized and excluded products follow other terms.

Can opened cosmetics be returned?

Usually not for a simple change of mind when a hygiene seal has been broken. Faulty, damaged, incorrect or misdescribed goods are separate.

Do Boots points make a product cheaper today?

Points normally create future value unless a specific registered member price applies. Compare the cash price first and check exclusions.

How should I compare Boots and Superdrug marketplace items?

First identify the named seller and fulfilment route. Match the exact product, then compare delivery, returns and support terms separately from direct retailer stock.

How we compared Boots and Superdrug

We checked official UK delivery, loyalty, returns and terms pages on 19 August 2026 and applied a seller, product-identity, cash-total and reversibility framework. We did not order products or test stores, delivery, returns, points or support.

Limitations

Prices, stock, promotions, thresholds, points, sellers and policies change. Pharmacy, medicines, services and marketplace products can use different rules. The two profiles and this comparison are prepared for one atomic deployment; publication-day checks, build and desktop/390px QA remain mandatory.
