RTX 5060 vs RTX 5070 Gaming Laptops: When Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Both GPUs usually have 8GB GDDR7 and broad laptop power ranges. Choose RTX 5060 when it buys a better screen or chassis; pay for RTX 5070 only when exact-model tests prove useful gains for your games or creative work.

THE SHORT ANSWER

RTX 5070 is worthwhile for a real performance need—not the badge.

Choose RTX 5060 for 1080p or 1200p gaming when it lets you buy a better display, 32GB memory or a quieter chassis. Choose RTX 5070 for sustained high-refresh QHD play or GPU-heavy creation only when independent testing shows a useful lead in the exact laptops. Do not assume a low-power thin RTX 5070 beats every full-power RTX 5060.

This guide compares published specifications, current UK listings and ownership constraints. We did not benchmark the sampled laptops. Frame rates vary by game, resolution, graphics preset, DLSS mode, frame generation, processor, cooling, memory and firmware, so a GPU name cannot support a universal percentage claim.

The 5070 has about 38% more CUDA cores on paper, but that is not a 38% frame-rate promise. Both share the same standard 8GB memory capacity and bandwidth, and both span power configurations. Cooling and sustained clock behaviour determine how much silicon is used. Laptop makers should state total graphics power; if they do not, seek the specification sheet or independent measurement.

Current UK laptop prices: why the badge is not the budget

Publication-day price snapshot: official Scan UK pages checked 19 August 2026. The MSI Cyborg RTX 5060 was £1,149.98 and in stock; the ASUS V16 RTX 5070 was £1,099.99 and marked low stock; the MSI Katana RTX 5070 was £1,399.99 and in stock. Each displayed £5.48 next-day delivery. These are market examples, not controlled GPU benchmarks. The cheaper ASUS 5070 shows why buyers must compare complete systems. Recheck price, stock, TGP and the exact manufacturer code at checkout.

A fair GPU value comparison needs matched processor, memory configuration, cooling, display and power. When that is impossible, compare what the extra cash buys in the real machine. A £200 premium that also adds a QHD screen and stronger CPU is not a pure 5070 premium. A £200 premium that removes memory or storage may be poor value.

When RTX 5060 is enough

RTX 5060 is the sensible starting point for a 1080p or 1920×1200 internal display, especially for competitive games where settings are reduced and the processor often becomes important. It also suits general university or home use with evening gaming because budget can go to quieter cooling, longer battery life, a better keyboard or 32GB memory.

Both GPUs have 8GB VRAM, so moving to 5070 does not remove every high-resolution texture or ray-tracing memory constraint. At QHD, some demanding games may need adjusted textures, ray tracing or upscaling on either tier. DLSS and frame generation can improve displayed smoothness in supported titles, but generated frames do not replace a healthy base frame rate or eliminate latency.

Choose the 5060 when the saving pays for a genuinely better machine. A colour-accurate 165Hz panel, second SSD, replaceable memory and solid warranty can outlast an invisible frame-rate difference. See our total-cost guide before financing an upgrade.

When RTX 5070 is worth the upgrade

The 5070 makes more sense for a 2560×1600 or QHD display, higher graphics settings, ray tracing, GPU rendering or creation applications that use its additional cores. It is also rational when the laptop will remain on mains power and the exact chassis sustains its GPU limit without unacceptable noise.

The upgrade must be material in your workload. Find independent tests of the exact manufacturer code at native resolution. Compare one-percent-low frame rates, not only averages, and note whether DLSS, frame generation and ray tracing were enabled. For creation, match application version, project type and export settings.

If the 5070 option is within roughly the cost of a memory or SSD upgrade and the rest of the machine is equal, it can offer useful headroom. If it forces a dimmer screen, soldered 16GB memory or a thinner thermal design, pause. A desktop may deliver better sustained performance and repairability when portability is occasional.

Power limits and cooling matter more than buyers expect

NVIDIA lists 45–100W for RTX 5060 and 50–100W for RTX 5070. Manufacturers balance that GPU budget with CPU power, fan profile and temperature. Two laptops with the same GPU can therefore behave differently in a long gaming session. Dynamic Boost can shift power between CPU and GPU as the workload changes.

Look for sustained testing after the machine is heat-soaked, fan noise in decibels at a stated distance, keyboard surface temperature and performance modes. A five-minute run can flatter a thin chassis. Also check whether maximum performance requires the included large power adapter; gaming on battery normally reduces speed sharply.

Do not infer quietness from “Max-Q”. NVIDIA describes Max-Q as a collection of efficiency technologies including power gating, Dynamic Boost, Advanced Optimus and WhisperMode. Actual acoustics still belong to the laptop design and selected profile.

Display, processor and memory checks

Display

Resolution, refresh rate and response time determine whether extra GPU performance is visible. Check measured colour gamut, brightness and response rather than “IPS-level” or “gaming”. A 144Hz panel with slow pixel response can smear motion. For creation, colour accuracy may matter more than refresh.

Processor

At competitive settings and high frame rates, CPU performance can limit results. Compare sustained processor power and cooling, not just Core 7 or Ryzen 7 branding. Older HX processors can be fast but may use more energy than newer mobile designs.

Memory and storage

Sixteen gigabytes is a starting point; 32GB is useful for demanding games, creation and heavy multitasking. Confirm whether RAM is dual-channel, soldered or replaceable and whether a second M.2 slot exists. A 1TB drive fills quickly once large games and captures are installed. Our support and lifespan guide covers upgrade constraints.

Ports, battery and daily use

Check USB-C charging and display output, HDMI version, Ethernet, card reader, webcam, wireless standard and port placement. A rear power connector and video output can keep desk cables away from the mouse. USB4 may matter for fast storage or docking, but confirm the exact port functions.

Manufacturer battery capacities are not gaming-runtime promises. Dedicated-GPU play drains batteries quickly and reduces performance. For lectures or travel, seek controlled light-use results and Advanced Optimus or a MUX implementation that can disengage the discrete GPU. Weight must include the power brick.

Keyboard layout, trackpad, webcam and speakers matter every day. A powerful 2.5kg laptop with a large adapter is movable, not necessarily mobile. Decide whether the machine will commute before paying for thinness that reduces cooling or upgrade access.

Retailer, warranty and returns

Scan provides detailed manufacturer codes and graphics information, which helps identify reviews. Its standard consumer cancellation route and product-specific warranty should be checked before opening or configuring the laptop. Currys offers stores, collection and its published 30-day online inspection policy, subject to as-new condition.

Save the specification page, invoice and serial number. On arrival, verify processor, GPU, RAM, storage, screen resolution and condition before installing a large library. A fault is different from buyer’s remorse. See our warranty guide and refurbished buying guide.

Our verdict

Our default is RTX 5060 for value-focused FHD gaming and RTX 5070 for verified QHD headroom. But the current market even contains an RTX 5070 example below the sampled RTX 5060 price, proving that shopping by tier alone is unreliable. Compare exact systems, then use our shortlisting method.

Frequently asked questions

Is an RTX 5070 laptop much faster than RTX 5060?

It has more cores, but the real lead varies with power, cooling, CPU, game and settings. Use exact-model benchmarks.

Do both GPUs have 8GB VRAM?

NVIDIA’s standard configurations list 8GB GDDR7 and 384GB/s bandwidth for both RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 Laptop GPUs.

Is RTX 5060 enough for QHD?

It can be with suitable settings and upscaling, but demanding ray tracing or high-resolution textures may require compromises. Test evidence must match the game.

Can a lower-power RTX 5070 lose to RTX 5060?

Power and chassis behaviour can narrow or sometimes overturn expected tier differences. Never compare names without TGP and testing.

Should I wait for a sale?

Track exact manufacturer codes. A sale is useful only if the display, memory, GPU power and warranty remain the configuration you intended.

How we compared RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 laptops
