IKEA UK Review: Furniture, Delivery, Assembly and Returns

IKEA’s UK offer combines a vast catalogue with a recognisable design system: buyers can coordinate storage, tables, seating, lighting, textiles and kitchenware without piecing together unrelated ranges. Flat packaging lowers transport and storage costs, but transfers work to the customer. Assembly, wall safety, disposal of packaging and correcting a wrong measurement all become part of the purchase.

This independent review uses live IKEA UK product examples and official pages for delivery, Taskrabbit assembly and returns. We have not bought these products, assembled them or tested IKEA’s delivery. The aim is to identify the costs and constraints that product thumbnails cannot show.

What IKEA UK is best at

IKEA is strongest where repeatable dimensions and modular accessories make a room easier to plan. KALLAX inserts turn open cubes into mixed storage; BILLY units can be combined across a wall; simple LACK tables fill a defined need without pretending to be heirloom furniture. Replacement parts, assembly instructions and measurements are usually surfaced on the product page.

The range also makes it easy to overshop. A low individual price can turn into a much larger basket of inserts, doors, legs, boxes, lighting and delivery. IKEA price snapshot: three familiar storage choices

These products answer different briefs, so they are not competitors. The useful comparison is between the product price and the cost of making each one safe and useful. A £40 KALLAX with four doors or baskets may cost more than the frame suggests. A £55 BILLY may need delivery, a suitable fixing and careful handling on stairs. A £10 table is excellent value only within its load and material limits.

Measure the room, the route and the package

Furniture measurements should be tested in three places: the final footprint, the route from entrance to room and the area required for assembly. Include skirting boards, radiators, sockets, window handles, sloping ceilings and door swing. A bookcase that fits the wall may still be impossible to rotate upright beneath a low ceiling.

Then open the package details on the IKEA product page. The KALLAX example is 21.08kg and its package is listed at 115cm long; that matters to one person using public transport or a small car. Multiple packages may belong to one product, and doors, inserts or underframes can be separate articles. Verify that every package and fitting is present before starting.

Use masking tape or flattened cardboard to mark the footprint. Observe the route for a day: does the table catch a walkway, does a drawer collide with a bed, and can a cupboard door open fully? This simple test is more reliable than judging scale from a carefully styled room photo.

Materials and durability: read beyond the product name

IKEA publishes material descriptions that help set expectations. The LACK example uses particleboard, fibreboard and a honeycomb paper filling rather than solid timber. The KALLAX listing also describes particle- and fibreboard with honeycomb paper filling and surface foils. Those constructions can offer useful stiffness at modest weight and price, but they are not interchangeable with solid wood when considering repeated disassembly, moisture or repair.

Match the material to the job. A lightweight occasional table does not need to carry an aquarium or be used as seating. A cube unit needs load distributed within its stated shelf limit. Wipe-clean care instructions do not mean prolonged wetting is safe. If furniture may move house repeatedly, check whether joints and fixings tolerate disassembly.

Tall storage must be secured as instructed to reduce tip-over risk. The wall type determines the fixing; the fastener suitable for masonry may be wrong for plasterboard. If uncertain, use a competent installer. Do not omit securing because the room has no children—an open drawer, uneven floor or heavy objects placed high can change stability.

IKEA delivery and collection

IKEA says available delivery options depend on order size, location, demand and stock. Its service page describes standard delivery in roughly 5–30 days and an express option that may be available from the next day when ordered before 2pm, or within four days, for an extra fee. Those are general ranges, not a promise for a particular postcode. Checkout is the source for the actual date and charge.

For small parcels, IKEA advertises free delivery over a £60 threshold, while the non-threshold price is shown from £5; eligibility and current conditions must be confirmed in the basket. Larger furniture uses different services and charges. Some remote areas, islands or access situations may have different availability.

Collection can be the better choice when the packages fit the vehicle and can be lifted safely. Check the number, dimensions and weight of every package—not the assembled furniture dimensions. Protect the vehicle interior and secure the load. A saved delivery fee is poor value if it risks injury, damages the product or requires hiring a larger vehicle unexpectedly.

Assembly through Taskrabbit

IKEA’s UK assembly page directs customers to Taskrabbit and says furniture assembly starts from £33. It states that securing eligible items to the wall is included without an additional charge. The service excludes electrical and plumbing work, and the published description says packaging removal is not included. Availability, scope and the exact quotation depend on the products and location.

Compare the quote with the realistic DIY cost. Include time to inventory parts, unpack, assemble, level, secure and recycle packaging. A simple LACK table may not justify paid assembly; a wall of tall cabinets may. The installer needs clear space and suitable access, and the customer remains responsible for confirming where hidden pipes and cables may run.

Before the appointment, check package labels against the order and photograph visible damage. Do not discard packaging until the parts and finish have been inspected. Clarify whether the task includes fixing to the wall, joining units, levelling doors and moving the item into its final position.

The 365-day return policy—useful, but not unlimited

IKEA’s published UK policy says shoppers can return products within 365 days with proof of purchase. Opened or assembled items may be accepted if they are complete, undamaged and in a resalable condition; original packaging is not required. IKEA’s help material indicates that opened products may be refunded to a refund card rather than the original payment method. Custom-made and perishable items are among the exclusions.

That is generous compared with many furniture goodwill policies, but returning a bookcase is still a physical task. An assembled unit may need to be transported safely or carefully disassembled without damage. The nearest store, vehicle, package weight and any collection charge can matter more than the nominal window. Keep the receipt or IKEA Family record and photograph condition before transport.

For online orders, statutory cancellation rights and rights for faulty, misdescribed or unfit goods sit separately from IKEA’s goodwill policy. IKEA states that eligible online cancellation within 14 days can include the basic delivery charge; exclusions and return costs still need checking. Missing parts, damage and faults

Count boards and hardware against the instructions before assembly. If a panel is damaged or a fitting missing, use IKEA’s claims and spare-parts routes before improvising. A substituted screw can pierce a surface or weaken a joint, and forcing a dowel may turn a replaceable part problem into accidental damage.

For a defect, keep the article number, receipt, photographs and a concise description of when the issue appeared. Distinguish transit damage, a missing component, a manufacturing defect and wear after use. The appropriate remedy may differ. 1. Measure the room and access route, including assembly and rotation space.
2. Open product and package details for dimensions, weight, materials, load and package count.
3. Add every required component: inserts, doors, legs, lighting and appropriate wall fixings.
4. Compare collection with delivery using the actual vehicle, lifting capacity and checkout charge.
5. Price assembly honestly, whether that means your own time or a Taskrabbit quotation.
6. Inspect before building and retain proof, instructions and packaging until the item is accepted.

Our verdict

IKEA UK can deliver very good practical value for buyers who treat furniture as a small planning project rather than an impulse purchase. Clear dimensions, modular families and accessible examples such as LACK, KALLAX and BILLY make shortlisting easier. The trade-off is transferred work: transport, assembly, wall safety and a bulky return may belong to the customer.
