Energy-efficient appliances: how to compare labels, capacity and running cost

An A rating is useful but incomplete. The number below it, usable capacity, household use and complete delivered price determine whether an efficient appliance will save money.

Compare consumption at the capacity you need, then calculate your own cost

Use the energy label to compare like-for-like models, but read the consumption figure and measurement period rather than relying on the A-to-G letter. Choose a capacity that fits normal loads, multiply official consumption by your electricity unit rate, and add water, delivery, installation and expected ownership years. A lower letter-grade model can still cost less overall when its purchase premium is much smaller or when an oversized appliance would be used inefficiently.

Energy labels are designed to make models within a product category easier to compare. They do not predict one household’s bill, and the headline grade does not mean the same number of kilowatt-hours for every size or appliance type. A large efficient fridge-freezer can consume more electricity than a compact model with a less impressive grade, while a washing machine’s figure depends on a defined Eco programme rather than every wash you might select.

What a UK appliance energy label tells you

The familiar colour scale runs from A to G, with A representing the more efficient end of the current scale for that product category. The rescaled labels deliberately left room for products to improve, so a model that once appeared as A+++ under an older scheme cannot be translated by simply removing the plus signs. Compare products carrying the same current label system.

The grade is a summary. The numerical information is more useful for estimating cost. The measurement period varies by category: refrigeration labels normally state annual energy consumption; ovens state consumption per cycle; and washing machines and dishwashers commonly state kilowatt-hours per 100 cycles. Washing-machine labels also identify rated capacity, Eco programme duration, water per cycle and noise information. Tumble-dryer labels and methods have changed over time, so always read the unit printed beside the figure.

Use the consumption number, not only the letter

Two washing machines can share an A grade yet consume different amounts because capacity and design differ. Conversely, a smaller B-rated appliance may use fewer absolute kilowatt-hours than a much larger A-rated one. Begin with the smallest capacity that comfortably handles normal use without creating constant half-empty or overloaded cycles.

For laundry, consider the weight and frequency of typical loads, not only the largest duvet washed twice a year. A 9kg drum can suit a family, but it may be unnecessary for a one-person household that washes small loads. For refrigeration, calculate the usable fresh and frozen space needed and avoid paying to cool air in unused capacity. How to calculate appliance electricity cost

The core calculation is simple:

Electricity cost = energy consumption in kWh × your unit rate in pounds per kWh.

Preserve the label’s time base. If a washing machine states 49kWh per 100 Eco cycles and you expect 220 comparable cycles each year, divide by 100 and multiply by 220. If a fridge states annual consumption, multiply that annual figure directly by the unit rate. Do not add the electricity standing charge to the marginal cost of one appliance: the household generally pays it regardless of which washing machine is installed.

Ofgem’s published typical direct-debit electricity rate for 1 July to 30 September 2026 is 26.11p per kWh including VAT, with a 57.19p daily standing charge. The price cap limits rates, not the total bill, and actual rates vary by region, tariff and payment method. Use the unit price printed on your bill for a personal estimate. Worked example: a 9kg washing machine

The Bosch Series 6 WGG24400GB provides a useful exact-model example rather than a claim that it is the best washing machine. Bosch’s official specification states a 9kg rated capacity, A efficiency class, 49kWh per 100 Eco 40–60 cycles and 50 litres of water per cycle. The dimensions are 845mm high, 598mm wide and 588mm deep, and the official product page lists a 1,400rpm maximum spin.

At the Ofgem illustrative rate, 100 labelled Eco cycles cost approximately £12.79 in electricity: 49 × £0.2611. That is about 12.8p per cycle for electricity under the label test. At 220 comparable cycles per year, consumption would be 107.8kWh and the electricity component approximately £28.15 a year.

This is not a whole running-cost promise. It excludes water and wastewater, detergent, standby use, cleaning, maintenance and any programme that consumes differently from Eco 40–60. Load size, temperature, spin selection and local tariff alter the result. The value of the calculation is that the assumptions are visible and can be replaced with your own.

Current UK price snapshot for the exact same model

Comparing one exact model separates the product decision from the seller decision. On 25 August 2026, Bosch’s official page listed the WGG24400GB at £599 but marked it currently unavailable. Bosch’s general delivery information displayed £20 delivery for large appliances, but an unavailable product cannot form a purchasable basket. We did not retain earlier promotional or retailer quotes that could not be reproduced during this check. Delivery, installation, removal, stock and postcode availability can change the checkout value, so a live purchasable basket—not an old headline—is the reliable comparison.

Price note: Prices and fulfilment terms are dated examples, not permanent offers. Bosch’s page also described a promotional five-year warranty for qualifying purchases from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, requiring registration within three months. Recheck eligibility, the exact model and all terms before relying on it.

Capacity can outweigh a small efficiency difference

Oversizing has two costs. The larger appliance can be more expensive to buy and may consume more in absolute terms, even with a strong grade. Undersizing can be inefficient too: a small washing machine used for extra cycles or a fridge packed so tightly that air cannot circulate may defeat the intended saving.

Write down a realistic usage pattern. For a washing machine, count weekly cycles and the share that can use the labelled Eco programme. For a dishwasher, consider whether it normally runs full. For a fridge-freezer, measure current usable capacity and record which sections are genuinely used. Compare official numbers only among models capable of the same job.

Calculate whether the efficient model repays its premium

A better label does not justify an unlimited purchase premium. Estimate annual energy cost for both candidates, subtract to find the annual saving and divide the price premium by that saving:

Simple payback in years = extra purchase cost ÷ estimated annual running-cost saving.

If one model costs £120 more and saves an estimated £20 per year, the simple energy payback is six years. Then ask whether you expect to keep it that long and whether the more expensive model brings other value, such as better capacity match, quieter operation, a longer guarantee or more credible spare-parts support. Do not overlook water, drying and programme choice

A washing machine or dishwasher can trade energy, water and time differently across programmes. The Eco cycle is often longer because it cleans at a lower energy intensity. A household that routinely selects a rapid or hot programme will not reproduce the label figure. Compare the label, but also read the manual for the programmes you are likely to use.

For washing machines, stronger spin extraction may reduce the energy a separate tumble dryer needs, though textiles and noise constraints matter. For washer-dryers, check washing and combined wash-and-dry figures separately because rated drying capacity is often lower. Metered households should add water and wastewater charges using the supplier’s current rates.

Fit, installation and delivery are part of efficiency

An appliance that cannot be installed without rebuilding the cabinet is not good value. Measure width, height and depth at several points, including protruding controls, hinges, hoses and required ventilation. Check door opening, skirting, plinth, socket and pipe positions. Measure the full delivery route, including exterior gates, stairs, turns and lift doors.

Confirm what delivery includes. A doorstep service is different from room-of-choice delivery; connection may exclude plumbing or electrical alterations; recycling may require the old appliance to be disconnected and accessible. Reliability and repair can dominate lifetime impact

The lowest annual energy estimate does not compensate for premature replacement. Check guarantee length and registration conditions, access to service, spare-parts availability and whether common wear components can be replaced without disproportionate labour. A repairable appliance kept in use may be a better financial and environmental choice than a marginally more efficient model replaced early.

No public review sample can prove the future reliability of an individual appliance. Repeated owner reports may reveal issues worth investigating, but they do not establish failure rates without controlled sales and repair data. A practical energy-efficient appliance checklist

  1. Define the job and capacity. Record normal household demand rather than shopping for the largest number.
  2. Measure the site and route. Include clearance, ventilation, doors, pipes, sockets and stairs.
  3. Compare current labels. Use identical units and preserve whether consumption is per cycle, 100 cycles or year.
  4. Calculate personal cost. Apply your unit rate and realistic use, then add water where relevant.
  5. Price the complete basket. Include delivery, fitting, accessories, membership, recycling and finance.
  6. Check ownership support. Read guarantee registration, service and spare-parts information.

Balanced verdict

The most useful energy-efficient appliance is not automatically the model with the best letter. It is the correctly sized, properly installed and supportable model with the lowest credible complete cost for the household’s real pattern of use. Start with the numerical label data, calculate with your tariff and preserve the measurement period. Then test whether the purchase premium can plausibly be recovered during the expected ownership period.

Frequently asked questions

Does an A-rated appliance always use the least electricity?

Not in absolute terms. The grade is relative within a product category and is influenced by capacity. A larger A-rated appliance can use more kilowatt-hours than a smaller lower-rated model. Compare the numerical consumption and capacity for the same job.

Why is the washing-machine label based on 100 cycles?

The standard period makes different models easier to compare. Divide the figure by 100 for an approximate labelled energy use per cycle, then multiply by the number of comparable cycles you expect. Actual programme, load and temperature can change use.

Should I include the electricity standing charge?

Usually not when comparing the marginal running cost of two appliances, because the household pays the standing charge regardless of which model is installed. Use the electricity unit rate for the appliance calculation. The standing charge belongs in the whole household bill.

Is a larger washing-machine drum more efficient?

It can reduce the number of cycles for a household that regularly fills it, but an oversized drum used for frequent small loads may not deliver that benefit. Match capacity to typical laundry and compare official consumption among similarly suitable sizes.

How accurate is the annual running-cost estimate?

It is a transparent scenario, not a guarantee. Accuracy improves when you use your current tariff, realistic cycle count and the programmes you actually select. Energy rates, load, ambient conditions, maintenance and product ageing can all change the result.

Is it worth replacing a working appliance just to save energy?

Not automatically. Compare the purchase and installation cost, expected annual saving, repair condition and remaining useful life. A small annual saving can take many years to recover and replacement also has material impacts. Replace when the whole ownership case makes sense, not solely because a newer label looks better.
